Photo of the Week 56
Greetings from the United Kingdom! I came primarily to visit friends, and thus I’ve taken a bit of a vacation (or a holiday, as the Brits would say) from being a travel writer. I have not stepped foot in a museum, purchased a souvenir or consulted a guidebook. I could say, however, that I’ve been moonlighting as a food and nightlife writer of sorts, considering I’ve done not more since I got here than stuff my face and booze it up.
All of which is to say these might not be the Photo of the Week candidates you would expect from London.
A bar on my own personal pub crawl tour of the neighborhood of Shoreditch.
Photo B
I was inspired by the simple message of this sign in Camden.
Photo C
The stunning view from the tallest bar in London, in Canary Wharf.
Photo D
Biggest meringues on the planet (scientific study) in Borough Market.
So, which is your favorite photo?

As much as I enjoyed my time in London, I couldn’t wait to return to New York. If you’re based in the United Kingdom and want a chance to check out my hometown, click here for cheap flights to New York from Jet Abroad.

I like the juxtaposition in A…the festive lights and colors behind and in front of the rather glum bartender. “Another long night at the office….watching other people have way more fun.”
I remember that look from my short lived stint as a bartender. Much more fun being on the other side!
I haven’t a favourite, but you are aware, aren’t you, that the “Take Courage” in picture B is an advert for a brand of beer called Courage?
Ha! No, I was not aware. Adds a level of humor then!
Definitely A is my favorite due to the colors and angle.

It’s been fun to explore with a bunch of locals!
I vote for D… it reminds me of the Portland and Berkeley farmer’s markets I miss so much!

I always love exploring markets when I travel. I’m not much of a shopper but I just love the atmospheres and seeing the design and thought that goes into the products!
I like the reality check from OrpingtonT….makes the sign even more clever. I like A best and I agree with others about color and composition.
Yes, I like it too! Although it does tell me that maybe I’m looking too hard for life messages when I’m reading too much into a beer sign…
Photo C! Love that light.

Thanks Emily! Me too…. unfortunately I hate that other balcony junking up the shot. Grrrr.
A! I’m heading to London for the first time in two weeks and I can’t wait. How much longer are you in the UK?

I just got home yesterday! So close, yet so far
I love the colors in Photo A!
[...] This crazy night at a Brooklyn warehouse party — what my parent’s generation may have referred to as a rave – ended with watching the sun rise from the roof in Photo A. This reminds me of one of the photos from Week 56. [...]
I like photo A the best as a photo but am voting for B.
The Take Courage thing is interesting. Courage Brewery haven’t advertised using that slogan for a very long time, so it must have been a fairly long-standing local feature.
Maybe a German or Czech brewery might adapt the slogan to “Take Pils”
Ha, that would definitely be a controversial slogan!
I like C – purely because that was the evening you were with me

Aw, Lou! I had such a fantastic time with you. Thank you for everything.
