Hey Nick, again, I know this isn’t the answer you want, but you’ve literally just got to go. Getting work, legal or not, as a Westerner in Thailand is ALL about the connections and you should be suspicious of anyone who offers you a position from afar. There are so many Westerners hanging around looking for those kinds of jobs, no one ever needs to hire someone without meeting them, you know? So I’d show up with some savings, let people know you’re looking for work, ideally find some odd jobs and get involved with the community.

I do know one or two businesses on Koh Tao that are currently considering selling — Living Juices being one of them. Get in contact with them via Facebook 🙂 Good luck!

Hey Nick, it’s true — things just get stricter all the time. Unfortunately the only real advice I can give you is to head to Thailand, find somewhere you love, get settled into the community and THEN think about buying a property. Those who try to skip those first steps tend to get screwed. Good luck!

I have been in the teaching game for over 10 years and now looking to change my life…would love to head over and work/own a bar/cafe ….I have heard the rules about coming into Thailand have become much stricter without having a work visa organised before hand.

Any advice/contacts you can put me in touch would be appreciated so much.

I think in Thailand, it’s all about who you know 🙂 Show up, make connections, and jobs will find you eventually! It’s definitely not a place to get hired from afar…
