Lindsay, I appreciate your concern for other travelers but I can confidently assure you that those who have encountered harm on Koh Tao are in the small minority compared to the hundreds of thousands (millions?) who have visited with nothing but beautiful memories. And I say this with the authority of someone who lived there for seven years -- I think that gives me a leg up on some YouTube videos.

You do realize a few couples, and other tourists traveling there have been murdered, correct? This is 100% NOT a single, one off case. There are multiple true crime channels on YouTube that have told the story of those killed there. In the comments of those videos you can find stories of not-so-nice experiences. There are also stories of people who didn’t have issues when visiting, but they are nowhere near as many as negative ones. I’m really glad that what you experienced was absolutely wonderful, but sadly, that doesn’t seem to be the reality for many tourists. It’s widely accepted that Koh Tao is dangerous and corrupt, with a mafia family running it, and it seems the police are happy to cover up murders and not investigate too much in exchange for money/favors. All of Thailand seems to be gorgeous, and have many beautiful beaches and fun things to do, so to me, it just wouldn’t be worth the risk. Obviously no matter where you travel (some places more than others), you have to be wary of your belongings, and keep your money and passport safe, but with the info we have now on Koh Tao, I think it’s a bit too much stress to worry about serious bodily harm, when you can travel to other areas that seem to be safer.

Hey Joanna, the island is eight square miles. Most people have motorbikes, but I definitely have friends who have spent years there and only get around on foot! You can also get a push bike. I would stay on Sairee, just for convenience -- and there's nowhere I would avoid. I don't find Mae Haad as charming so I probably wouldn't base myself there. However I really very highlight recommend my ebook for a stay as long as yours -- you'll find ALL the info you are looking for and so so much more!

hi, i am planning on doing a few dicing courses in koh tao and this will take me around 3 months. i was all happy and excited until i typed 'koh tao' into google and the first things that came up were all these horror stories about deaths, murders, rapes etc. the fact that everything is run by mafia families and that the police is also run by them.
i am a 22 year old female, so you can understand why i got a little scared.
i have a few questions..
how big is the actual island? will i be ok on foot?
best place/safest place to stay for 3 months?
best places to eat?
things to avoid?
thanks

Definitely a good lesson to always keep important documents and wallets tucked away somewhere safe! Sorry that happened to you -- I've always felt very safe on the train, so it is a good reminder to be vigilant as anything can happen anywhere.

[…] Yes. Follow up question: is Koh Tao “Death Island”? No. There was an awful, horrific double murder here in 2014 but this is hardly a trend and you are not in more danger than you would be anywhere else, and especially anywhere else in Thailand.
