Loved this post about Burning Man. I'm still a virgin and hope to make it out to the playa this year. A lot of my friends out here in LA are of the 'burner' variety, but I still struggle with a lot of the same things in terms of leaving no trace. Many festival goers and burners even, will just go and party (which is great, heck knows I do my fair share!) but bring loads of pre-packaged items and just create so much trash. I remember leaving Oregon Eclipse festival last summer appalled at the amount of trash that camps had just left behind! I mean, we're trying to promote awareness and consciousness here ~ that's the whole point of the festival...so why are people leaving litter across our precious Gaia? What are they really taking away from these experiences? All we can do is try to spread this awareness, and be that b**** who keeps nagging people about their trash usage. Recycle recycle recycle! (I have had actually arguments, er intense disagreements with friends/roommates about it)

In terms of festivals that have eco-conscious courses/talks, I suggest checking out some of the truly beautiful festivals on the west coast. California's got Lucidity, Lightning in a Bottle, Symbiosis, to name a few. They're similar to Burning Man in some ways, but on a more manageable smaller scale (showers **and trees and often bodies of water!), with plenty of workshops and yoga and all sorts of yummy global community flavour.

I agree so wholeheartedly and it's always so nice to hear from a kindred spirit. I'm always trying to find new ways to be a slightly more sustainable person and ways to share that journey here. It's great to hear others are on the same page. Happy burning!

I've read through your archives before but now that I'm planning on attending Burning Man this year I came back to refresh my memory on your thoughts.
And I love them! I totally feel you on the being the annoying asshole friend who is talking from her high horse and bugging everyone who's trying to have a good time. BUT THESE THINGS MATTER! We can't have a good time if we aren't taking care of the Earth which is inherently a PART OF US! I admire you for sorting through all the trash yourself. I also get disheartened seeing these things happen and how they are happening all the time everywhere. But if we all do our part and keep nagging in a nice way somethings gotta change!
And I would totally attend a greening your burn seminar if you put it on!

Hey Jess! I know how you feel. I have found writing about the burn to be a very cathartic experience -- I encourage you to just go for it, whether you decide to publish or not! Let go of any guilt you have for not having the most perfect magical rainbow-filled experience. That to me was the most important step :)

I follow you and a bunch of other well known female travel bloggers and I'm happy I came across this post in my recent scroll on your site. I've been waiting to go to the burn for over six years and finally went this year. It ended up feeling like a lot more bad things vs. good...overall good but not great like I imagined but I know next year will be even better from the learning! It is a lot of work, struggles etc, and I was thinking about how to write about it all without seeming so negative but the truth of the matter is, I think everyone struggles and has a story when it comes to prepping, living and surviving that week. I feel better about writing my story now. Thanks for the read!

I love that you've stuck to your guns, and even if you only got through to one member of your camp to think a little more before buying styrofoam plates (fortunately, they haven't been available in Australia for over 20 years), you've made a difference! ;-)
