This was absolutely brilliant - particularly "I realized I do too much of the travel part, and too little of the being places part." This sums up so much of our professional travel for work.

I loved the sentiments on Nepal (particularly the momo's). I lived for a year in Nepal during college and think fondly of those days. Thanks for taking me back down memory lane.

Hi Tammy! That sounds like a really good plan. But it's the opposite of my plan! I spend all my time traveling/working in those little towns in a bunch of countries. One my time off - I want less of that and more nutella pancakes and beer! But you're dead right - those little towns we always drive through are always full of great little adventures - even if for an overnighter here and there. I learned more Khmai in Kompong Chnang for 3 days than PP for 3 months.

I am with you on exporing the art of sidetrips. I am an expat in Cambodia, and while I try to travel to surrounding countries as much as possible, sometimes a trip to the nearest town can be much more rewarding. Fewer tourists, more cultural immersion and better food.

The paint is saffron water. Imagine the effort in picking it all, not to mention the cost. The shape is said to resemble a lotus. The painting, as with new prayer flags, is sponsored by people on auspicious days, like weddings or festivals. Hard work... Check out the guys back exercises!

I understand your point and surely it is best to travel when time at the destination far outweighs the time getting there.

Mind you I love having a seat by the window on a train and just watching the world go by.

That bridge does look very long and people are walking it!
