Awwww, too bad you didn’t have a great time! My boyfriend and I went in 2017 and it was so fun! We actually only planned to stay 2 nights and ended up staying for the 4 I believe. There was construction happening but only far away and didn’t bother us. Semuc Champey is one of the coolest places energetically that I have EVER been and I have traveled all over the world. We took the exact tour your did but maybe a different time of the year? We ended the tour with the float down the river which was fun too, the local kids brought us beer for cheap on the river and took our trash at the end! The next day we hitchhiked back to Semuc and spent the day there without guides which was lovely. The food at that roadside restaurant WAS so good…mmm. The crew that was staying at Zephyr was great and we had a blast partying and playing pool, I do remember that terrible laptop, but I thankfully didn’t need it. I don’t recall bugs but they usually don’t tend to bother me anyways. I would definitely go back again, although I may put Laos above it on my list 😉

I found your post linked from Adventurous Kate’s post, and it made me so happy/relieved. I know I shouldn’t just *take your word for it*, but honestly I was kinda looking for an excuse not to take the super long bus rides through Guatemala just to do this day trip. As always, thanks for your genuine post and for sharing your honest opinion! I’m definitely going to think twice about making the trek here.

In reply to Jenny. Well, as I outlined in the post it was just the whole experience that was overwhelming to me. I've been blessed to see so many beautiful things in my travels, and for me the sum total wasn't worth all the parts it took to get there. Tarantulas in the dorm can do that to a girl!

No offense but you are nuts!!! 🙂 Semuc Champey was the most incredible experience of my life – my eyes have never seen anything so beautiful in my entire life. Yes the bus ride is the pits but if it was easy, everyone would be there. I went Sept. 2016 and three months later, I’m still stalking #semucchampey instragram tags to relive that experience. I highly recommend – stay at El Retiro lodge.

What a great post about this lo Guatemala. The candle light cave tour is one of the highlights so far. The trip to Lanquin is a long sit though. Have you been to Cuba?

I wasn’t that impressed when visiting Halong bay either ? So, I guess I understand your feeling ha!
I guess i found it pretty similar to krabi and around.
