In reply to Alex. I am taking a 3 month hiatus in Bali / Gili after finishing a few projects across the world. I'm heading to Gili this friday and feel a little lost lol :). I can't decided whether Gili Air or Gili T is a better fit for me. perhaps a little bit of both is the answer. In addition, I don't drink, but do want to do shrooms and smoke weed while there. I would prefer to pay more for peace of mind and security, and also, get better product. For example, if Gili Air or Gili Meno has better stuff, I prefer to go there to avoid any trouble. In your experience, thoughts??

In reply to V. Hey V! Frankly, hot water shower spots are pretty thin on the ground, at least when I was there. (Which was a few years ago at this point, to be honest.) The non-hot water ones are definitely not an arctic blast, they are kind of just lukewarm and really feel pretty nice in comparison to the heat! You might actually crave it to be colder :) Hope that helps ease your mind!

I am travelling to Gili T in December and am having a bit of a nightmare with accommodation. I am looking at budget type but not hostels, one level up from there, and want somewhere with a hot water shower. I cant seem to find any within my price range.

Do you have any recommendations, or failing that, is a cold shower simply that? Cold ie like having an ‘arctic ice blast’ or just luke warm?

In reply to Marc van der Veen. Hey Marc! So far these are really the only two spots I can speak definitively to. The diving in Gili is in my mind overall preferable to the diving in Koh Tao, though you won't find anything that compares to the deep pinnacle sites like Sail Rock or Chumphon. I definitely left a little piece of my heart in Gili T!

Thanks for the breakdown and clear story! I was a bit surprised at the relative high cost of living compared to the rest of SE asia. Looking at doing my IDC/MSDT there but definitely open to other places, especially for afterwards to live the beach bum instructor life. Have been to koh tao so can definitely understand your comment about wanting to stay there. I found the diving itself a bit mediocre though due to trampled reefs. Any other recommendations to live and dive are very welcome! Cheers

Hey Inka! Yes, accommodation is definitely best found upon arrival — I would guess maybe like, 2% of the island’s accommodation is available online, and it’s all the most expensive 😉 Don’t worry about dive schools booking up. There’s nothing more important in your DMT journey than visiting your school before making a final decision, in my opinion. Best of luck! You’ll have a blast!

Hey thanks for the great post! I’m traveling out to Gili next month to do my dive master so your posts have been incredible helpful! I wondered how you went about finding accommodation at a monthly rate? I cant find anything online, is it easy to find/ advertised once your on the island? also what time of year were you there? i want to check out dive schools when I arrive but since I get there June 13th close to peak season I’m worried courses will be booked up so should I maybe book in advance?

Thanks for this really useful post Alex! It great how you compared what you get for your money regarding accommodation – sometimes the cheapest room isn’t always necessarily the best value for money and it’s often worth spending a little more to get a lot more comfort – I find that a lot in India. I pay $250 for a while house in Goa and can live comfortably on less than $500 a month! Why would I ever go back to the cold and expensive UK! Thanks for showing me that Indonesia is just as affordable
