I asked y’all in a story poll your thoughts on Koh Tao vs. Bali, two of my favorite Southeast Asian islands, and this answer from @rika.royale really did not come to play 😅

I cannot tell a lie; after two months in Bali always stressing over if I had the right dress code, hobbling around in heels, getting names on lists, having my hair blown out, and often feeling just ever-so-slightly out of place, it felt amazing to get back to Koh Tao and just go FULL FERAL 🤣

My luggage didn’t arrive for a few days and I didn’t even care — a friend brought me some old jean shorts and flip flops and I wore them day and night!

It felt so good to be back on an island where I always know where to go, and there’s always a familiar face and a smile waiting when I get there.

(Don’t get me wrong; I do also love the glitz of Bali… most of the time! It can be a lot of fun and has a lot of upsides.) But I kinda forgot how good it felt to drive around barefoot and not have to make dinner reservations and scream sing Rihanna on a rickety wooden picnic table, ya know?

Anyway. I have years ahead to learn all the intricacies of my new home — thanks to @villakerangsue! In the meantime, I’m so eternally grateful to @wanderwomenretreats and the Wanderland Guide to Koh Tao for bringing me back to my old one! 💛

Did you know this is one of the first products I ever created?

I remember when I emerged from the haze of writing my first draft back in 2018 and sent it off to editors (one of them being my mom 🫶🏼 who was a professional writer so well qualified!) and feeling so drained from putting nearly a decade of my life and island knowledge to paper. Then I got back the truly stunning final layout from my amazing designer and I felt so lifted back up again! I had zero clue how to launch a digital product (kinda still don’t 🤣) but wow was I so insanely proud of what I created.

I went to a low key dinner with a few friends, not even as a celebration just to catch up after having been glued to my laptop for a while, and one of them brought me flowers and made a little toast — a small gesture I have never forgotten; and such a reminder to take every opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments and milestones in the lives of people we love 💐

In 2020 I came back to work on the update after my @wanderwomenreteats and… well, you know what happened that year!

I finally got to come do it right in 2023. I worked with friends and current island locals to get the best, most up-to-date research, and then spent some time running around doing my own research — the best part of my job!

I’m so insanely grateful to all of you who have bought this guide over the years (which comes with lifetime access to updates, by the way!) 🫶🏼 Especially those of you who buy it message me you don’t even have plans to go to Koh Tao yet… you just want to see and support the things I’ve created. YOU all make me feel like the luckiest girl in the world.
