Wander Women Maldives:
A Freedive + Spa Liveaboard
Indian Ocean
September 13-20, 2025
Step aboard our privately chartered floating sanctuary and join us for a week of unparalleled ocean exploration and nurturing of the body and mind. Set against the backdrop of the Maldives — with a community of Wander Women by your side — this trip is the epitome of luxury meets adventure, designed to nourish your soul and ignite your inner siren.
We’re thrilled to announce the return of our most luxurious and sought-after retreat, reimagined with a focus on the captivating world of freediving and mermaiding. This is a Wander Women first! Building on the incredible success of our previous Maldives retreats (read about the magic here, here and here), we’ve secured the prime week of the year for encountering majestic manta rays in the world-renowned Hanifaru Bay along a custom designed freediving route!
This isn’t just a vacation; it’s a transformative journey. Whether you are a seasoned freediver or just starting out — this retreat is open to both and offers a variety of course options and learning tracks tailored to different experience levels — we can’t wait to share the breathtaking underwater world and postcard perfect islands of the Maldives with you. This is the paradise blueprint — the international term atoll is literally derived from the Maldivian atholhu! Think pristine lagoons, secluded sandbanks all to ourselves, and unparalleled access to the planet’s top destination for manta ray encounters – all while honing your freediving skills and embracing your inner mermaid. Already been to the Maldives with us? You’ll see it from a whole new perspective.
Along the way, we’ll explore the connection between freediving and yoga, both of which hold conscious breathing at their core. We’ll blend Wander Women’s signature funky flows with breathwork and meditations led by our all-star team of PADI Freediving trainers. Don’t be surprised if your maximum depth or breathhold improves as a result of this retreat!
No matter your mermaid mode — freedive or snorkel — this experience blends the best of Maldives in one unforgettable journey. On Wander Women Maldives, your days will blissfully blur together underwater adventures, peaceful spa treatments, unique yoga classes, and one-of-a-kind experiences — think Underwater Photography Editing and Underwater Posing workshops to bring out your inner Ariel, PADI Shark and Ray Conservation Course to make you an ocean ambassador, and did someone say Mermaid Origami as the ultimate party trick?!
Beyond freediving, courses and spa indulgence, we’ll visit deserted sandbars, experience stand-up paddle boarding in crystal-clear waters, be spoiled with private beach BBQs and pajama party onboard movie nights, and stargaze from the top deck jacuzzi. Spending an afternoon on an uninhabited white sand beach wouldn’t be complete without a professional photographer to capture it — so we’ll have Rayna onboard along the way to snap photos of you all week long. Need a new profile photo swimming serenely with turtles, or dare we say, a manta ray? We got you! We’ll be nabbing underwater shots too.
Come enrich your year by learning or honing a new skill, getting a fresh passport stamp, and building a deeper connection with the ocean and with yourself. We can’t wait to take this journey with you.
Never want the fun and relaxation to end? Check out our pre and post retreat extensions: Malé Cultural Extension + Overwater Bungalow Extension (available now!)

The Itinerary
The below itinerary is a sample planned route — but as we want our trip to be unforgettable, we’ll constantly be in search of unique experiences. The exact itinerary will be customised for the optimal wildlife sightings and weather conditions and is subject to changes due to season and circumstances. We vow to constantly seek ways to surprise and delight you!
Day 1: Welcome to the Maldives! You’re on island time now. Whether you’re coming from the Malé Cultural Extension or straight from arrivals, you’ll be whisked onto our transfer boat to board our floating home for the next week. On arrival we will meet for a refreshing coconut, cold towels and safety briefing as we set sail to remote atolls. This afternoon, those signed up for PADI Freediver or PADI Advanced Freediver will slip into your groups, get to know your instructors and begin your introductory theory. We’ll all reconvene for a special sunset moment on the bow with a yin yoga massage class to work out your travel kinks. To close out the day, we’ll dine al fresco on the deck courtesy of our expert chefs. Take a deep breath of salty air — the ocean called you here.
Day 2: Rise and shine! Early birds can enjoy sunrise salutations with our onboard co-instructor Keke McBride before the first session of the day, where students will head to the classroom and certified divers can enjoy an optional refresher session in the water. After working up an appetite, dig in to our delectable breakfast buffet and fuel up for a second session in a shallow bay — or our floating spa oasis opens at 9AM for the luxuriating spa seekers! We aren’t the only ones getting spoiled by spa treatments today — the cleaning stations in this bay are the manta ray equivalent of our own onboard spa. When we’re done squealing into our snorkels, we’ll recharge with lunch and some downtime onboard. Glide into the afternoon on a stand up paddleboard or spa bed, fun dive on the beautiful reefs, or get ready to tackle a third session with your instructors. This evening we’ll emerge from the shallows to enjoy beach cocktails (on our own private sandbank!) and a classic Wander Women Sip + Stretch yoga session with Alex. To celebrate a big day, we’ll party in style — pajama party style that is! — for dinner and an ocean-themed movie night on the top deck, set to a new moon.
Day 3: We’re bringing up the heat this morning with a vinyasa class before we cool off in the sea with the first dip of the day. Certified freedivers can up their game this morning with a freediving masterclass designed for those seeking to enhance their techniques and knowledge. After breakfast, we’ll dive back in and have another chance to swim with our gentle giant friends or explore other sites unique to The Maldives, including legendary wrecks, walls and the typical reef structures like farus, mayas and thilas. After lunch, enjoy a third session in the crystal clear waters, or get your adrenaline fix with some watersports — they have to drag Alex off the speedboat-pulled inflatables. This evening we’ll cheers to a great third day, and to certifying our new Freedivers and Advanced Freedivers! We’ll toast to them with happy hour on the beach and a celebratory BBQ banquet where we can dance the night away with toes in the sand.
Day 4: Another day, another spectacular sunrise moment stretching it out with a morning flow, or taking it easy and sleeping in a little (we won’t judge!). We’ve dubbed today Tails Tuesday as we now dive into our Mermaid and Advanced Mermaid courses! Snorkellers, certified freedivers and mermaids can enjoy a full day of fun dives marveling at the color explosion of countless marine creatures inhabiting the Maldivian reefs! This afternoon, take advantage of time to lounge on the spa deck with a cup of tea or giggle on the bow with a glass of bubbly, and then salute the sunset with a grounding slow flow. After a delicious dinner we’ll get creative with a mermaid origami class led by Alex, or feel free to head to the hot tub and count stars.
Day 5: It’s World Manta Day and we are starting the day off with a manta themed vinyasa session to (fingers crossed!) summon these flappy friends for a magical encounter in Hanifaru Bay. This bay is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve that facilitates sustainably led tourism and habitat protection for manta rays and whale sharks! Access to this protected area is strictly monitored and we will be guided by local rangers and drone assisted monitoring to pick the perfect moment. With scuba diving banned in the bay since 2012, and whale shark encounters quite frankly at their best on the surface of the sea, we can’t think of a more sublime spot for freediving encounters with the oceans’ gentle giants. In 2024 we were blessed with a squadron of over 80+ mantas when we arrived — we’re still pinching ourselves! While on ‘stand-by’ for our snorkel, we’ll continue the manta theme with a newly released PADI AWARE Shark and Ray Conservation course, led by one of our incredible instructors Jillian Blakken-Strauss. Tonight we seal in the magic of the day with a super special chef’s dinner on the bow — vibes high and happy sighs!
Day 6: Gear up the ‘gram because today is all about learning how to capture the perfect underwater moment — in-front and behind the lens! We’ll kick the day off with a spicy vinyasa session at sunrise to get the body moving before jumping in the water. Photography enthusiasts can sign up for four amazing workshops on freediving photography, underwater modeling, photography editing, and a special photography and modeling class. If you’re more of an IRL moments girly — we got you too — forget about the photoshoot and just continue enjoying the magic of the Maldives with fun dives, watersports, making full use of our five-star spa, or finding a quite corner of our gorgeous yacht to finally read a page of that book you packed ;-). In the afternoon we’ll frolic to a deserted beach for some silly partner yoga before a sumptuous dinner on board.
Day 7: Get an early start with Alex for our final sunrise stretch before our last two water sessions, either on the line or just for funs, blowing underwater goodbye kisses the turtles and eagle rays we’ve spent the week with. After lunch our floating home will begin its journey back to Malé while we have an afternoon of last minute spa sessions and soulful reflection with our traditional closing circle ceremony. We’ll gather for a farewell cocktail (or two!) and a final dinner at the al fresco restaurant onboard. It wouldn’t be a Wander Women liveaboard without a themed send-off sea feté — Maldives Met Gala looks not mandatory, but highly encouraged!
Day 8: Today we’ll say farewell to our beautiful ScubaSpa home after a final breakfast, exchange of photos and contact info with all your new Wander Women besties for future get togethers. Unless you’re joining us for our back-by-popular-demand Overwater Bungalow Extension — and in that case, get ready to continue the fun for another three days!
Where We’ll Stay and Where We’ll Eat
This isn’t your average liveaboard! We’ll be seeing the best of the Maldives from a luxury yacht, awarded as a PADI 5 Star Dive Resort, complete with spacious cabin suites, the world’s largest onboard spa, a top deck jacuzzi, and much more. Rooms are spread along two decks and feature panoramic windows or port lights, and all rooms have air conditioning and en suite bathrooms with hot showers. There are several soothing and recharging cabin options — read more about room types here!
When you’re not relaxing in your roomy cabin, you’ll be luxuriating and enjoying the yacht’s ample amenities. The nearly thousand square foot spa is the largest of its kind, spanning two decks, six treatment rooms, a secluded deck for open-air Thai massage or meditation and a spa lounge for relaxation. And of course, in typical Wander Women style, we’ll get our yoga on! Some days we’ll flow on the shaded deck, while some days we’ll hit a private beach for our asanas. The rest of the day, bathe in the tropical climate on the spacious sun-deck to melt away all your stress. And it wouldn’t be complete without an outdoor jacuzzi, which is the ideal spot from which to sip a glass of fizz while the sun sets on another day across the Indian Ocean.
All of your meals are included and will be prepared by internationally qualified chefs. We’ll dine on varied cuisine at buffet-style meals, complete with live cooking stations served in the spacious al fresco restaurant at the rear of the main deck. Vegetarians and vegans will be easily accommodated. For those looking to indulge further, wine and cocktails are available each meal for purchase (and between meals at the bar — let’s toast to you!). We were blown away by the work of the onboard chefs on both our previous Maldives retreats!
The Freediving + Snorkeling
The Maldives boast world-class sites with rich biodiversity and in the north in particular, stunning untouched coral and bucket list underwater wildlife sightings. Our all-star team will offer a variety of included workshops and masterclasses in all things freediving, photography, and ocean conservation along the way.
While manta rays are found in Hanifaru Bay all year round, September is when their congregations are largest (up to 250!), which also draws in numerous whale sharks (last year we were blessed with half a dozen!). Bioluminescence, turtles, hammerheads, spinner dolphins, eagle rays and other reef sharks are all a possibility during this time as well, so keep your eyes peeled.
Prepare for temperatures around the pleasant low 80s (28°C), and the water will be balmy and inviting, ranging from high 70s to low 80s F (26-29°C)
Our yacht will be accompanied by multiple support boats including a luxury dive dhoni which carries our equipment and is kitted out with everything you need for a seamless and comfortable day, as well as a dinghy for zipping to islands, sandbars and sporadic wildlife sightings. We’ll be diving with experienced, multilingual instructors and boat crew throughout the week.
Freediving from a liveaboard offers the opportunity to visit many different reefs and sites throughout the Maldives, so we’ll drop anchor at secluded dive spots off the beaten path. While the itinerary will be informed by weather conditions, our route will take us to explore tropical locations off of the typical tourist grid in addition to the magnificent squadrons of manta rays in Hanifaru Bay!
Snorkelers will be catered to with a private snorkeling zodiac, a personal snorkeling guide for the week, and customized snorkeling sites generally twice per day. Our underwater photographer will hop between groups making sure she snaps you, too! And bonus: all snorkel gear is included.
Expect healthy coral reefs, sandy bays, abundant technicolored fish, everything from magic macro finds to pelagic wanders and, hopefully, some famous spotty friends. Whether you’re a complete newbie or an instructor yourself, there will be plenty for you to see. Groups will be divided based on course selection and experience level.
Optional Course Upgrades

Please note: Courses are subject to availability and there are limited spaces for each course to ensure optimal teacher to student ratio for personalised training. We highly recommend you purchase your PADI freediving or mermaid courses at the same time as booking your cabin to avoid missing out!
The Environment + Our Impact
Given that the Maldives is one of the world’s most vulnerable ecosystems, our vessel and their operators have sustainability as a top priority. ScubaSpa has reduced plastic use by installing mineralized water plants, eliminating single-use plastic water and toiletry bottles, replaced plastic straws with reusable glass and aluminum ones, and treats all onboard waste with a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant.
We partner with several organizations for this retreat! The ScubaSpa team cooperates closely with the Maldives Whale Shark Research Program to promote its community-focused conservation initiatives, and we partner with locally run and operated Save The Beach on our pre-retreat Malé Cultural Extension to highlight their community initiatives — they are also the recipient of our charitable donation for this retreat.
Additionally, we have partnered with PADI to bring you the newly released PADI AWARE Shark and Ray Conservation course onboard. This signature speciality course will be taught by Jillian Blakken-Strauss and will add a fresh new certification to your lineup so that you can become a torch-bearer for oceans everywhere!
Getting There and Away
Our floating home departs from Malé, where you will fly in and out of Velana International Airport (MLE), the main airport in the Maldives. This means you can skip the expensive inter-island flights normally required to explore these atolls! Airport transfers to the boat each way are included. Contact us for additional questions about booking your travel.

F.A.Q.
So does non-refundable really mean non-refundable?
Yes, all payments are non-refundable and all remaining invoices are due 120 days before departure. If the trip must be postponed or canceled due to events beyond our control, you will be offered the choice between a full refund and applying your payments to a future trip.
The reason payments are non-refundable is that we start incurring costs from the moment someone presses “book” — from credit card fees to high hourly wages for our team who correspond with guests, manage trip inventory and our e-commerce platform, analyze forms to create room assignments, coordinate with our local vendors, and beyond.
There’s nothing we want more than for our guests to take and enjoy the travel they have worked hard and paid for. Thank you so much for your understanding and respect of our need to enforce this policy strictly. We want to be here to travel with you for years to come! Thankfully, many common reasons for cancellation are covered by travel insurance! Speaking of…
Will I need travel and dive insurance?
Yes, it is mandatory for all Wander Women Retreat guests to have personal travel insurance for the duration of the trip. Our affiliate, World Nomads offers coverage at affordable rates. Those of you choosing the Freedive Enthusiast package must also have freediving insurance, either through a travel insurance provider such as World Nomads, or an industry specific membership insurance such as Divers Alert Network (DAN). We cannot more highly recommend you book your travel insurance as soon as you make your trip deposit to protect your investment!
What’s the difference between freediving and snorkeling?
Freediving is the practice of holding your breath when diving underwater without the use of breathing equipment, such as a scuba tank. Snorkeling is a relaxing practice observing the underwater world from the surface while breathing through a snorkel. Both are beautiful ways to experience The Maldives!
What certification do I need?
Absolutely none! This retreat is designed for everyone — from snorkel sweeties to freedive fanatics. Those looking to start their journey with freediving or mermaiding can sign up for our beginner level courses, and already certified divers can continue their education with the advanced course options.
Snorkelers can relax with spa treatments and guided snorkeling sessions to soak up the underwater wonders of the Maldives, while already certified freedivers can also enjoy included workshops and in-water sessions with our local guides and international team.
What will this trip be like for non-freedivers?
This retreat is open to (and perfectly suited to) snorkelers looking for a luxury experience with some built-in besties to discover the magic of the Maldives with. We chose this boat specifically for its incredible amenities that appeal to both freedivers and non-divers! The spa menu consists of more than twenty treatment options including Balinese, Thai, Filipino ‘Hilot’, Ayurvedic, Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi, Warm Bamboo, Lava Shell and Hot Stone therapies. Additionally, we have some activities planned for everyone, freediver and snorkelers alike, including beach and sandbar visits, paddleboarding, onboard crafternoons, and beyond. And of course, you’ll have full range of the yacht’s amenities, where you can take in all the views of the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean! We couldn’t have dreamed up a more relaxing trip if we tried.
Is there a price difference for snorkelers or freedivers?
No. Non-freedivers will choose the Spa Seeker package, where they’ll be spoiled with eight spa treatments, guided snorkeling, and all the other non-freedive activities listed. Our diehard mermaids can choose the Freedive Enthusiast package, where they can enjoy every dive offered in the itinerary. Freedivers can purchase spa treatments separately. Once you book your room type, we’ll reach out with a welcome email to lock in your choice of package.
How safe is this boat?
The safety of our guests is of utmost importance! This yacht has high safety standards, including regular fire drills, multiple exit points, fire hoses and fire extinguishers, EFR trained staff, a defibrillator, and an emergency evacuation boat. Contact us if you have more questions.
Do I need to be good at yoga?
Absolutely not. (And frankly, we don’t believe in the idea of being “good” at yoga!) We have a range of yogis from brand-new beginners to talented instructors join us on our trips. You’ll get the opportunity to sample a wide range of yoga styles, and you can opt in or out of as many classes as you wish. Some guests attend none at all!
What’s the wifi situation like?
We all love some time to unplug, but we understand checking in with family or work is important, too. Each cabin will have 5GB of data included in their package, and additional data can be purchased, ranging from $10 for 1 GB, $40 for 5 GB, or $100 for unlimited data. All prices are subject to a 10% service charge and 16% GST tax.
While it might not be exactly as speedy as home, 4G speed data (up to 15MB/S) isn’t bad for floating in the Indian Ocean. The yacht is covered with hot spots, meaning you can log in on up to four appliances at once. The range depends on proximity of broadcasting transmitters located on local islands. Good reception is available most of the time.
Getting a local SIM card when you land at the airport is also an option. We’ll send you more details upon booking.
How much money will I need to bring?
There are a range of fabulous cherry-on-top services available on board for that extra vacay vibe. Everything including additional spa treatments, dive courses, dive rental equipment, upgraded WiFi packages, laundry service and an extensive bar and smoothie menu! A full menu of services and pricing will be provided upon booking, however if you are considering booking a freedive or mermaid course, or unsure which package to choose — please reach out to us now for more information! For other onboard services, here’s the general idea.
For alcohol not included in the itinerary, expect to pay around $6-15 per drink, depending on your preference for beer, wine, or cocktails. For non-alcoholic drinks, (like fresh coconut juice, zero proof cocktails, or sodas) prices range from $5-10 per drink.
While you’ll be fed three delicious meals per day by internationally qualified chefs, everyone has a snack hankering here and there! Snacks available outside of mealtime — including delicious fresh fruit smoothies ($10).Laundry service starts from $10 per kg.
For tips to the local boat crew, we recommend between 5-15% of your room rate, or whatever you feel comfortable with.
Please note, all prices are subject to a 10% service charge and 16% GST tax. The boat accepts cash payments in USD as well as Visa and MasterCard credit cards (4% surcharge). Onboard prices and surcharges are subject to change as per the operator or local government.
Is this trip women only?
This one’s for the girls! (Okay, all our trips are but…) Our customers continue to give us the feedback that they love taking time to dive with just women in this male-dominated industry. We are so proud of the supportive, empowering vibe of our dive retreats and know that you’ll love them, too!
I have a unique rooming request, how can you help me?
Email us! If you want to share a bed in one room, want a triple with two of your besties, want to be on the waitlist for a sold out room type, whatever — we’ll do our best to make it happen via retreats@alexinwanderland.com.
Is there an age requirement?
You must be 18 years old or older.
Is there a waiting list?
There will be a waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis in case spaces open up. If the retreat is full and you’re still interested, email us at retreats@alexinwanderland.com to be added to the waiting list.
I still have questions, or cute photos of my dog. Can I contact you?
Um, yes please! Our email is retreats@alexinwanderland.com.
