Drum roll – preferably the steel drum number from Under The Sea, if possible – please: Today, I’m proud to be making one of the biggest announcements of my blogging career. An announcement that’s been in the works for six months – or if you look at it another way, six years.
I’m a PADI AmbassaDiver for 2016.
I first heard the term “PADI,” the world’s leading scuba diver training organization, in 2009. I’d just arrived on Koh Tao and had a faint inkling that maybe, despite my fears and doubts, I needed to give this whole scuba diving thing a try. Six years, several certifications and hundreds of dives later, I’m back on Koh Tao again – a PADI Divemaster, a grant recipient from the Women Diver’s Hall of Fame, and now, an ambassador for the PADI brand to boot. It’s hard not to feel like things have come full circle in the most perfect kind of way. I feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be, doing exactly what I’m supposed to do and writing exactly what I’m supposed to write.
Some of you already know the whole story. Completing my PADI Open Water in Thailand was a turning point for me. The following summer, I completed my Advanced Open Water in the Cayman Islands while completing an apprenticeship that first introduced me to underwater videography. Upon my return to the US, I attended the Beneath The Sea dive show for the first time, learning about an organization called the Women Divers’ Hall of Fame.
Eventually, I fulfilled my dream of moving back to Thailand and begun working as an underwater videographer by day, and a travel blogger by night. Ever a student, I applied for the WDHOF’s continuing education grant and to my delight, I won! I used the grant to move to Indonesia to complete my PADI Divemaster training. By then, this blog was a full time job, and I was thrilled to have a platform from which to encourage others to join me underwater.
Why I Love PADI
Ever since the first day of my Open Water course, PADI has represented excellence in standards, compassion in conservation, a way to make friends and see new places, and a certification card that is recognized around the world. Here’s a little more on why I’m so excited to partner with the biggest name in diving.
• Education: For this right brained creative, all the “science-y” stuff surrounding diving seemed overwhelming at first. I can’t explain the pride I felt acing the physics sections of my Divemaster training – my PADI education gave that to me.
• Friendship: Diving has brought so many treasured relationships into my life – those with friends, mentors, and beyond – moreso than any other hobby or passion. The only way I can explain it is that diving is such a special experience, sharing it with someone creates a special bond.
• Wanderlust: PADI opened the world up for me. I want to dive it all. I want to do a liveaboard in Raja Ampat. I want to dive with whales off the coast of Domenica. I want to see the kelp forests in California, to swim with sharks in the Galapagos, and to submerge myself in the Great Barrier Reef. I’ve had a serious case of wanderlust since long before I know what size wetsuit I wore, but diving has given my travels direction and focus.
• Conservation: My zeal for diving ignited a second, perhaps more important passion for me – conservation. Coming face to face with the crises facing our reefs and oceans inspired me not just to make changes in my own life but also to share what I’d learned with others. That spark of awareness diving inspired in me prompted me to lead a more sustainable, contentious life – and that will stay with me forever.
• Work opportunities: PADI’s slogan is, the way the world learns to dive. Over the years, I’ve had countless readers write to me asking for tips on how to work in the dive industry. Long before I had any affiliation with them, my response was set – if you’re planning to go pro, you’ve got to dive PADI. There’s simply no other certification that opens the door to as many dive jobs around the world. And while there’s no sugar coating the fact that it can be a tough one with long hours and low pay (tip your instructors, y’all), I think we can all agree you’d be hard pressed to find a more beautiful office.
What This Means For Us
I’ll be writing diving-specific content each month, some to be published here on Alex in Wanderland, and some to be published on the PADI website. Of course, those of you who have been around for a while know that as one of my fave topics, diving often comes up much more often than that. So basically, it will be business as usual. The main difference is you’ll probably notice me talking about PADI a bit more on social media, and hopefully working to arrange some fun giveaways and getaways for you.
For me, this means a huge professional milestone, a chance to further pursue my passions, and the opportunity to reach an even wider audience by writing for PADI.com. Follow that link to find my articles on their fin-tastic blog!
What’s Next
As always, I’ll be looking for diving opportunities everywhere I go – for my travels in 2016 this means potentially enrolling in some advanced tech courses here in Thailand, doing some fun diving along the coast of Brazil, and looking into some weekend liveaboards when I’m in California. I’m also excited about potentially attending my first DEMA (the largest diving conference in the world!) in Las Vegas in November. Who knows? I might even be able to sneak a dedicated Caribbean dive trip into my summer like I did last year.
For now, I’d love you hear from YOU. (Duh!) What diving topics do you want to hear about? If you’re a diver, what dive spot or certification course do you want to tackle next? If you’re not, what’s stopping you? Let’s blow some bubbles in the comments!
This post is brought to you by PADI as part of the PADI AmbassaDiver initiative.
Yay! I am so excited for you. You completely deserve this with your clear passion for the oceans and ocean conservation, your stunning underwater photography and your knack for telling scuba stories in an interesting and compelling way. I’m excited for us, your readers, to get to hear even more about the underwater world. So fun!
I’d love to hear more about diving in North America, like you said Cali or the kelp forests in the Pacific Northwest, or even maybe in some lakes, just to show it is possible to dive in non-tropical locations while at “home”.
Thanks Lauren! You are so sweet — and thanks for all the feedback on content ideas! Great motivation to get diving on the West coast.
Congrats Alex, that is really awesome! Love all your posts about diving =)
Thanks Kimberly! I’m so excited!
Congrats, Got interested in your blog after you wrote about finishing your DM and have followed you since. Love to hear where you are diving and look up some of your old trips to maybe go myself. In fact going to Roatan in July. Thanks also for all your travel tips getting a water filter bottle for that trip.
That makes me so happy to hear, Greg! Lots of diving goodness coming up around here but yup — in the meantime you can always check through my extensive diving archives (accessed from the arrivals link in my header). Cheers!
Such great news, Alex! I recently received my Open Water certification in Utila on a backpacking trip, and loved it so much that I ended up sticking around to complete my Dive Masters, all in one go!
For me, since I’m now a DM but have only been diving in one location (Utila), I’d love to hear about any other diving locations that have interesting features or backgrounds. For instance, I know you went diving in Lake Atitlan, so more stuff like that!
Wow, that is AWESOME Kelly! Congrats on your DM! I love writing about quirky dive locations…. definitely more of that coming soon!
congrats girl! you know it’s your passion. enjoy it.
Thanks Julia! Couldn’t be happier.
Congrats, Alex! This title is so well-deserved! Thanks to your blog, I’m eager to start diving again. I didn’t dive for six years (SIX!) and in less than a month time I’ll dive the waters of Bonaire! Your photography and passion is what gets other people excited so keep that up and you’ll be an awesome Ambassadiver for PADI!
Aw, Dominique, you are too kind! Thank you thank you. And enjoy Bonaire — I’m so excited for you!
What holds me back is fear of sharks! haha that may sound ridiculous, but I’m absolutely terrified! I love to go snorkelling and I have thought maybe snuba diving would be the perfect amount of baby steps to work me up to trying scuba diving one day 🙂
Not ridiculous at all! I think that’s a common thing holding people back from diving, but it’s an easy phobia to dispel with facts, and so it’s not too bad to overcome 🙂 I’ll get working on it!
Congratulations Alex! Amazing news, so happy for you 🙂
Thanks Steph! I’m smiling ear to ear!
I am so so pleased for you! so much so that i actually squealed a little bit and even told S (a non-blog reader) that the blog that inspired me to try diving (I mae him try it with me too) is a PADI ambassador! (he’s super pleased for you too!) so congrats congrats congrats such an amazing accomplishment for you! xo
PS) In answer to your question – I’m pretty much interested in everything dive related so if you write about it, i’ll read it!
Aw, this made me smile Amy! Thanks! You guys are the absolute best — how could I ever feel alone with this amazing community cheering me on <3
You’re the perfect fit! As someone who was inspired by your writing to start diving (and love it), I’m looking forward to seeing what comes from this!
The love of diving is contagious! Honored to hear I was the one who infected you 😉
I’m so happy for you, Alex! You seem so excited! I always love hearing about your diving adventures, even though I will probably never get in the water to dive myself considering I can barely swim. Can’t wait to see what 2016 and this partnership has in store for you!
Never too late to learn 🙂 If you ever get to Koh Tao, there’s a great swim school offering adult lessons here. Might be a great reason for a trip!
This is so incredible Alex!!! Huge congratulations girl, God only knows you bloody well deserve it. After all I used your DM posts to research about my own course. I can’t wait to read future PADI content on here.
It would be ace if you completed some tech courses and then wrote about them. Most recreational divers seem happy to stop at Advanced/rescue level, but there’s a lot to be said for increasing your skill set. Just because your deep cert takes you to 40 metres doesn’t mean you need to go deep every dive, but if a depth related problem occurs at 25m you’ll be instantly better equipped to deal with it. Spread the word far and wide!
I’m working to set up a tec course now 🙂 I love being an eternal student!
That’s MY sissy!!
Love ya sis!
Congrats! Great write up. I can’t wait to get PADI certified. Would love to know where you got your open water since I’ll be in SEA next year doing the same!
Hey Michelle, I did my Open Water in Koh Tao — I can’t recommend it more highly! It’s the perfect destination to get started in and you’ll meet plenty of others doing the same.
I finally got to us my certification on New Years Day after getting it three years ago and not being able to use it since. After only diving in Ohio so long ago I was kind of nervous but I did a quick refresher session and then the dive guide was so amazing at making sure I was okay and remembered what I needed to. And this was all at a resort in Jamaica where at least one dive per day is free for certified divers!!! I only got to go once because of time between flying but I can’t wait to go again!
Wow, what an amazing resort perk! I’d definitely take advantage of that too. Glad you had such a great experience, and here’s hoping there are many more ahead!
Congratulations Alex.
What an amazing opportunity!
🙂
Thanks Janice! I’m pumped! 🙂
Yes, yes, YES! Super smart move by PADI! Love that organization and absolutely love all your dive posts (that photography though! *swoon*) so I can’t wait for even more in 2016.
This is definitely the collaboration I dreamed of when I first started blogging — feeling a bit like Cinderella now that it’s coming true! Woo hoo!
Wow, that’s amazing, Alex! I love reading your dive posts, so much even that I’d dare say they have inspired me to get my PADI Open Water somewhere in the near future. I couldn’t think of somebody more perfect for the role!
That’s amazing, Lisa! Go for it 🙂 You can certainly see it’s changed my life, and I have a hunch it would yours too!
Congratulations Alex!! You deserve it 🙂
Aw, thanks Erin! You guys are the best!
Wow Alex – congratulations! So inspiring. And you have me dreaming of diving again. I learnt to dive with PADI in Byron Bay 12 years ago. I then dived in the Maldives, Fiji, the Caribbean and Tahiti. But I haven’t been for a few years now. We live in Canada where the water is colder but I’m told absolutely stunning. You’ve inspired me to commit to get back into diving and to potentially making it a SERIOUS hobby. It sounds as though it has changed your world! And LOVE your photos!
Thanks Tracy, it has indeed! Wow, you’ve been to some amazing places 🙂 Let me know how your adventures in re-entry go!
Shall do Alex! And in the meantime enjoy your underwater world adventures 🙂
Well done Alex and super congratulations! You sound so excited about the next step in your life and so you should be!
I like reading about diving and the exotic waters and funnily enough I don’t mind snorkelling (nearby) as I like rivers and sailing on local lakes, but I have a fear of the open sea so I won’t be diving anytime soon lol!
I used to be paralyzingly afraid of open water too — I really think if I could overcome it, anyone can! Maybe I’ll have to dig in and tell that story soon 🙂
Congrats Alex. happy for you. now you are fortunate to see the world from inside and outside. the underwater garden of the world is yet to be explored by many. very few get the opportunity to experience it. best of luck in DEMA.
Wow, that’s exciting news Alex! I knew you loved diving, but I didn’t know you were a Dive Masters. Very cool collaboration and I look forward to see more dive updates. In a month I’m going to dive Aliwal Shoals in SA, which also should be a unique diving experience. Again: congrats!!
Wow, awesome indeed! That sounds like a fabulous trip — I look forward to reading about it in the future!
Congratulations! That sounds like an exciting new step. I have been thinking about doing DM training for a while now and think I must just take the plunge. Will you do a post on where you stand on PADI vs SSI or rather why you prefer PADI? I’d be keen to learn more! And yes, dive posts all the way!!
Hey Annika! I’ve mostly just addressed that in the comments when I’m asked 🙂 I’ve always been a PADI girl since I first signed up for my open water! While there are tons of differences between the organizations that I could go on for ages about, I believe for most entry-level consumer divers they are pretty similar — it’s like comparing Canon and Nikon when choosing a camera. That said, I think for those that want to continue on and perhaps work in the dive industry some day (believe me, it’s contagious!) PADI is the far superior choice due to the vast amount of job opportunities open to PADI instructors. Hope that helps 🙂
Yeah! Congrats! So excited for your new adventure. I’m even more excited that you might be coming to DEMA in Vegas this year!! 🙂 🙂
Oh my gosh! I forgot that you’ll be going too! The chances that I’ll go just doubled 🙂
Congratulations! You’re a natural choice for PADI, I can’t believe it took them this long to realize it!
I did my OW in Utila in 2008 and really enjoyed it, but I’ve only been diving once since then. I always seem to have issues with water filling constantly in my mask (poor fit, I assume), or getting super cold even in warm water dives. Maybe some tips/ways to overcome common diving barriers and distractions for those who don’t dive yet, or would do it more if they could figure some of that stuff out?? Also – affordable diving destinations! It’s not a cheap hobby, that’s for sure.
All great ideas, Mary! Thanks! For the mask — definitely invest in owning one that’s a perfect fit. It’s the best investment and great not just for diving but also for snorkeling! And you don’t have to spend a ton of money, you just have to get one that fits your face. Find a dive shop you know will be patient and have them help you find the perfect one 🙂
Congratulations!!! That’s so exciting, and you must be beyond thrilled! One thing I’m always wondering (and which I can’t seem to find much relevant information about online) in relation to diving is the potential complications if you have sinus-related issues. I have an appointment with my doctor to hopefully get a referral to an ear/nose/throat specialist (somewhat specifically to ask if my occasional issues with it would prevent me from being able to dive), but as someone who dives frequently, I am curious to hear your opinion.
That is a tough one, Marni. I have lots of sinus issues from lifelong allergies but thankfully they have rarely interfered with my diving. You are doing the right thing talking to an ENT! Let me know what they say!
Congratulations, Alex! I can’t think of a better partnership for you than PADI. I’m obsessed with the ocean and snorkelling, but have yet to try diving. I always look forward to your dive posts and amazing underwater photos nonetheless!
Thank you so much Ashley! Maybe diving will be your next big adventure? 😉
Well, you (and your amazing diving stories) certainly pushed me to become a PADI girl so you totally deserve it! Can’t wait to read more of your adventures in waterland! Congratulations! :))
Aw, that is awesome to hear! See you beneath the sea 🙂
Congratulations Alex – what an awesome accomplishment! My husband and I will be in Koh Tao in mid-February and are hoping to get padi certified while there. We’re thinking about taking the classroom/pool dive portion of the requirements back home and then doing the open water dives in Koh Tao to complete the certification. Do you happen to know if that’s an option and if so are there any places/things you’d recommend to us? Appreciate any insight you can share!
Absolutely, Stacy, that will be an option at any PADI dive shop! It’s a great option for those who don’t want to be stuck in a classroom on vacation. I recommend checking out Ocean Sound if you’re on the south of the island or Sairee Cottage if you’re in the north (I’m heading out with them next week!)
Congratulations! This sounds so exciting and I’m so happy for you!
I’ve done 10 dives and gotten two ear infections which has put me off. I have to go down really slow because it hurts my ears. I always tell my guides that it takes me a long time to go down and they always say OK but then go their normal speed. I had a guide actually pull me down by my fin in the Gilis after I told her I need to go down slow. Talk about feeling anxious! Diving is already an expensive hobby then having to pay for (sometimes) multiple Dr.’s visits to fix my ear infections just adds to the cost. I would love some advice on how to avoid ear infections or how to better equalize my ears. I don’t want to give up on diving because it’s so cool.
That is really frustrating Rachel! I’m so sorry you’ve had those experiences. Honestly, it sounds like the most important thing for you is to find a truly patient and understanding instructor. Next time you go diving, request an experienced instructor and give them a detailed account of the issues you’ve had in the past so they know that it’s not an issue of nerves or proper weighting (that instructor probably pulled you down because they thought you were too buoyant and needed a little push, which is not excusable considering you told them about your ear issues) and be sure to review all the hand signals for ear issues before you hop in. Let me know how it goes next time you get in the water!
SO awesome! Congrats on the partnership!
Thanks Christy! It’s definitely a blogging highlight for me.
I’m late to the Congratulations Party, but I just want to chime in and say how freaking PROUD I am of you…
Never too late for a nice comment 🙂 Thank you!
I’m so happy for you Alex! I remember saying to Marc when I first met you ‘I can’t wait to see what Alex does with her life’ I’m so glad we get to go through your journey through your blog. Big hugs. Love you❤️
Aw Laura, I teared up reading this! You guys have always been such cheerleaders for me and I never forget it. Love you too!
Proud of you, gorgeous. x
Torre! You’ve been on my mind lately. Emailing you later x
Congrats Alex – that’s awesome!! I have it on my short-list to upgrade my Padi cert to Dive-master one of these days, but waiting for my next tropical water opportunity. I’m in Portland for a while and it’s just too cold/murky here to be inspiring.
I don’t blame you 🙂 In general I’m a warm water wuss myself, though I have done a few cold water dives, including a day diving in 2C water in Iceland in a drysuit!
Wow – diving in Iceland would be incredible, but that is some seriously cold water, even with a dry-suit. They don’t make enough warm layers under there to keep you warm enough for long at that temp. Brrr!! You are braver than I am. 🙂
Wow, what an achievement! Congratulations Alex! Looking forward to getting even more jealous of your diving exploits.
Thanks Jade! I’m excited to get back in the water!
How awesome, congratulations! I’m looking forward to even more of your diving articles! 🙂
Thanks Jessica! Plenty coming up 🙂
Congratulations, this is so awesome and I couldn’t think of any better choice than you!
Right now I am also in Thailand (1st time!) in Railay and I love every second of it. Can you recommend a good PADI diving center in this Area? Many thanks Alex!
Unfortunately I’ve never been diving in that area! You can always head to PADI.com and use their dive shop finder to locate shops in the area 🙂 Best of luck!
That is so cool! As a fairly new diver, your diving posts are some of my favorites to read, so I’m definitely looking forward to new content and also to your experiences diving in California (where I live). I’m eager to hear about new diving opportunities close to home!
I actually have a post about diving in San Diego coming up, Erika, so stay tuned! Hopefully this summer I can add a few more experiences to my roster…
Fellow Alex here. I found your blog last summer while researching traveling to Koh Tao, and it’s one of the most comprehensive I’ve found. Good job! Thanks, too. I mean, the whole point of me looking at blogs was to get a bit more insight. Congrats on the new PADI recognition. Maybe I’ll see you around the island.
Hey Alex! Thanks for the kudos and welcome to Koh Tao! Hope you love it as much as I have…
This is such an amazing achievement for you and you definitely deserve it. I always think your diving posts are the best because it’s totally obvious how passionate you are about. It’s clear you are going to be a huge asset as a a PADI ambassadiver!
Diving is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time (a want only made stronger by all of your posts), especially completing my open water course. But I haven’t really been presented with an opportunity to do it.
After this trip I’m planning on spending some time in Asia (lucky for me my university also has an international study program in KL) so hopefully I can get some diving done in Central America and be a pro by the time I hit Asia. Because of course weekend trips to Thailand are like 99% of the reason I want to do the program in the first place.
I’d be all over that program too! Man, that sounds amazing. Enjoy every minute! And thanks for all the diving kudos 🙂
Congratulations on such a beautiful marriage!
Can’t wait to see what the 2016 diving world brings you 🙂
So far, a self reliant diver course… can’t wait for what’s next!
Hi! I’m starting my next adventure and I was thinking about purchasing a GoPro. What did you use to take these pictures under water? Was it the Powershot and underwater housing?
Hey Cristina! These photos were taken over several years with many different cameras, but none are from a GoPro. I mostly just use mine for video footage. Hope that helps!
My buddy and I will be going to Koh Tao in September to get our Advanced and Rescue diver certifications. So excited to see the island you love so much and eventually return to continue diving to my Instructors certification.
Awesome Mike! Koh Tao is an awesome center for dive training. Enjoy your courses!
This is so awesome! I love getting to read about other women divers. I got certified 3 years ago and it was the best decision ever. It opened a whole new world for me; a fresh perspective and an even greater appreciation of our oceans and planet. I would love to see the dive photos you get in Brazil girl! (I was born there). Congratulations on this diving & career milestone. Looking forward to reading more dive articles!
Hey Ana! Thank you so much for your warm wishes and kind words! I’m honored to be working with PADI and can’t wait to do some Brazil diving 🙂
Hi Alex, I LOVE your diving posts, and this is so exciting! Congratulations! I recently did my first dive in the Red Sea in Jordan, which was incredible, and I’m excited about doing it again in Hawaii later in the year. Do you ever dive in Europe/the Middle East?
Hey Debbie! I’d love to dive in Jordon someday. I’ve been diving in Greece, Iceland, Malta, and Spain — and I’ve blogged about all of them! Hawaii is amazing — enjoy!
Wow! Well done Alex. Can I have your life? That’s exactly what I want to be doing too. I only learnt to dive this year (in Koh Tao too) but loved it and am definitely going to keep it going. Looking forward to reading your monthly blogs on diving 🙂
Aw, thanks Hannah! Congrats on your diving certification and definitely keep those fins in the water! It’s such a magical ride. Happy travels and thanks for reading!
