Happy Birthday To Me
Today is my birthday.
Lately I’ve been floating on air. I’ve secured my first advertising contract, which makes the hours I pour into this site feel a bit more justified. I’ve also had tons of other behind the scenes deals start to fall into place. Not to mention, I’m traveling through Cambodia, and falling hard for it. Still, I feel a little sad being so far from home.
Birthdays were a big deal in my house growing up, and I carried on the tradition by always being the cake-baker, card-maker and surprise party-thrower for my nearest and dearest. And my birthday is still one of my favorite days of the year, which I usually spend lazing in bed, eating my favorite foods and watching my favorite shows while opening birthday cards and receiving calls from my faraway family. And I use my birthday-night to force all my friends to do whatever I’ve been fixated on lately- from bowling to mechanical bull riding. So while I’ll have Mark, two great friends from Koh Tao and I’m sure a bunch of brand new friends with me today, I still kind of wish I could transport myself back to New York!
Now I know what you are all thinking. How can I pull Alex out of her whiny misery and put a smile on that face when I can’t send her a birthday card or take her out mechanical bull riding? Via the internets, of course!
1. Subscribe
Subscribing means you will never miss a single bad-joke filled post, as they are delivered by email straight to your inbox or by RSS feed to your Google Reader. It also helps me out by showing advertisers that I have a loyal following. Simply enter your email in the Subscribe section of the sidebar or click on the orange RSS button under the Lets’s Be Friends section of the sidebar. I promise not to spam you with kitten videos.
You can also follow me on Twitter, subscribe to my channel on Youtube or friend me on Flickr!
2. Share
See the little icons at the bottom of this post for Facebook, Twitter, email etc? You can use those to share posts with your friends… and it really helps me out! Again, the more people that are reading Alex in Wanderland, the more likely advertisers are to sponsor my site… and keep me on the road!
3. Comment
My posts go live in the States in the morning, which means it’s evening here in Asia when comments start rolling in. Reading them before bed makes my day! And every once in a while I get a comment from a friend back home that I had no idea was reading, which is double the fun. Don’t be shy. Tell me when you have some advice for me, when you like my photos, when you have a story to share, or when you think my jokes are lame.

Just know that whether you do one of the above or not, you already give me a great gift just by reading. This blog has started to really become something, and it never could have happened without you all. Thank you all for coming along with me on this crazy ride I’m on! I can’t wait to see what the future brings and where in the world I’ll be celebrating next year.

Sometimes, when homesickness hits, the only cure is to call home with a cheap international calling service like Rebtel, which also offers free international calling between various countries.
Happy, happy birthday, Alex! I still remember seeing you in the hospital nursery with only the sign “Baby Baackes” on your bassinette. Your parents were still discussing what your name should be!
I love reading your blogs and seeing your fabulous pictures! The ones of Cambodia are especially interesting to me, having been there less than 2 years ago myself. I’m getting to know you better through your writing and like that a lot! So glad you’re getting some well-deserved advertizing $$. You’re working hard for it. Love and kisses, Betsy
Thank you for this lovely virtual birthday card, Betsy! There is a lot more of Cambodia to come!
Happy Birthday Alex! I was thinking yesterday about your various birthday parties, and one of my favorites was the trip to the llama farm. You had an interest in the exotic even at ten. Thanks, Betsy, for reminding me of the Baby Baackes sign! I was lobbying for something different, and Allegra was on the list of possible names, long before it was a household name for allergy medicine. Thank God convention prevailed.
I was just telling someone the Allegra story the other day. THANK GOD convention prevailed is right!
Aren’t you the lucky one, having a birthday and lazing around. My birthday is on Christmas Day when everyone is buzzing around doing Christmas Day things! And no, I wasn’t born in a stable.
Oh, that actually does sound a bit hectic! I bet people are always trying to get away with just one gift too 🙂 My best friend’s birthday is Halloween, which was always quite fun, actually!
Happy birthday, Alex!!! I hope it was unique, happy and meaningful. And here’s to many more!
Thank you Jen! That’s a very sweet birthday toast!
OK, since it is your birthday, 2 things:
1. I sent you a cupcake! See how it easy it is if you just ask for something!?
2. Since you asked for suggestions, I’ll give one of those too. Often I have to catch up and read many posts in one sitting. It would be easier if at the bottom of one post there was a link to “Next” or “Previous”. Traveling Turtle had that feature and it enabled me to read your blog like a book. Now after each post I have to go back to the main page. Oh I know…the suffering I endure!!! Oh well, you asked and that’s all I could think of. Happy Birthday!!
Hey, thank you SO much for both of these things! Just woke up to this and it made my morning. As for your suggestion, I never even thought about that feature! I just added it to the blog “to-do” list. Send the suggestions coming people.
