I’ve described Burning Man several times as simply a different universe. Never is this more true than at night. So for a nice lazy Saturday afternoon post, I wanted to share with you my photos of this alternative planet… after dark. As the sun begins to set, the temperature cools and neon lights blink to life along with many of Black Rock City’s nocturnal residents.
Now is the time to play, observe, participate in and enjoy the art all around The Playa.
To meet new friends and laugh with the old.
To hop on a Mutant Vehicle and see where the ride takes you.
To marvel and to gape.
To dress up and to play.
To watch a Man, and then a Temple, burn.
Which photo is your favorite?
All the photos look amazing; it must be an incredible place!
The second from last large photo (this one: https://www.alexinwanderland.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Burning-Man-At-Night_034.jpg) is my favourite – it gives a great sense of scale, action & wonder.
You blog is great, by the way. I stumbled across it by accident the other day & have become more than a little jealous at the experiences you’ve had all around the world! Life is definitely for living & reading your blog has made me realise just how little I’ve seen, tucked away in my small corner of the globe. Thanks for sharing your journey & all the best for future travels!
Thanks Jon! I appreciate your kind words. I’m sure there are many adventures ahead of you! Happy travels!
Now you should look at going to Africa Burns…in South Africa!
South Africa is high on my list! Maybe I’ll schedule a trip around a Burn :
The one of you! You look gorgeous!!! What a surreal experience, I have loved experiencing it through your eyes since I think my large-scale festival days are behind me, and yet I’m intrigued by this concept. Thank you!
Thanks Sarah! It’s been a fun challenge to write about. I am happy to say there is just one post left in my coverage… I’m ready to get to Peru π
I love the second photo with the bikes! I like that time of night right after the sun has set but the sky is still lit up.
That was actually in my Photo of the Week post at the time! It was a very special moment.
The Octopus! I’m putting it on my Christmas list!
That was definitely one of my favorite art cars. The pyrotechnics were so impressive!
Love the large statue with the fairy lights.
The Woman? That was a favorite of mine as well. Solemn by day, stunning by night.
Hello Alex, Great group of pictures, great night photographer. I’m leaning toward two favorites, #34 I would title “innocence rejected” …a beautiful young lady appearing out of synch, with a perfect background to ” make up” the photo.GREAT SHOT ! I also liked 3rd large full frame from bottom, really speaks in an ‘anti-climactic” fashion, call it” take a breath”. Good luck, be careful.jb
Thanks John! It was a fun challenge to photograph!
Wow, these photos are mind-blowing! I understand how you’d need time after not only to catch up on sleep but to even just comprehend all that you’d seen whilst there!
My favourite image is the silhouette of the guy wearing the headdress.
Thanks Jade! That was a great chance capture in the madness after The Man burn.
Beautiful night time shots! My night time photo talent needs to be pump up a bit. Things always turn out blurry and unrecognizable! Either you’re a great photographer or there was SO MUCH neon that it was like daytime!
You forgot the third option…. I took a billion photos and deleted 90% π
I love your photos, I really do! In Portugal we have a festival a bit similar to the Burning Man, with a different concept. It’s called Booom. If you ever come to Portugal, do not miss it π
I’ve never heard of it, Margarida! Thanks for the tip — I’m going to look it up!
Wow! Amazing pictures, I wish my camera took pictures like that at night. Are you using an iPhone or what camera do you have? (Sorry for this rather technical question, but I have a biiiiig Europe-Asia trip coming up and I am looking into buying a new camera…)
My favorite would be … probably the last three, they really say “Burning Man” to me π
Hey Marinela! Check out my Gear and Products page (in the Menu bar!) There’s links to all my photography equipment as well as brief reviews.
Great photos! This post and the ones before make me wanna go to the Burning Festival someday in the future. It looks like so much fun, the atmosphere and scenary seems to be so extraordinary!
I’m glad to hear Burning Man has crawled on to yet another Bucket List! It is definitely a worthy event π
Gorgeous photos
Thanks Katherine! I appreciate that!
I love looking at your pictures, being somewhat of a novice photographer I get how you must have to take hundreds of picture just to get a few really good ones. Keep up the great work. How do I get on the site to be ready to purchase tickets when they become available? I’m a rookie at doing this. First time to go to Burning Man. It’s on my bucket list. Thanks.
Hey Michael! I actually have a whole post with info about getting tickets and getting started π You can find it here, and I hope it answers your questions! If not, let me know: https://www.alexinwanderland.com/2013/10/21/surviving-burning-man/
