This week I’m back in Brooklyn after my trip back home to Albany. I was sad to leave my mom, my friends, my dog and my gym routine upstate but I just love NYC too much to stay away for long.
Yesterday my friends and I took advantage of having my car here and drove to Rockaway Beach. I’d never been and I can’t wait to write a full post about it and show you all my fun photos. It was the best day I’ve had in a long time. When you are going through a breakup or something similarly heartbreaking it can often seem like even happy moments are tinted by sadness… but this was not one of those times. I felt happy and carefree and grateful to be surrounded by so much light and love.
We laid on the beach all day and then whiled away the evening at an impromptu dance party on the boardwalk. All the while planes coming from nearby JFK swooped loudly overhead at regular intervals. Each time I looked up and wondered what far-flung destination they were carrying those passengers to. I know soon I too will be back on one of those planes heading out to my next adventure… but right now I’m enjoying being a traveler right here at home.

Lucky for me I have tons of friends who let me crash on their couches whenever I’m in the city, so I don’t have to worry about where to stay in New York! If you prefer to have your own bed at night, you can save big by searching online for deals on top New York hotels.
Typically I like flying into Laguardia because you get the great view of the harbor and the Manhattan skyline as you’re coming in for landing, but sometimes flying into JFK and over Rockaway Beach is a nice change of pace. I can think of a couple occasions where I’ve flown in right around sunset and looking down over the beach from 10,000 feet as the sun is setting can be just as beautiful.
I absolutely LOVE the views flying in and out of New York! They really are amazing. Somehow I don’t remember ever having a great view of the beach, only the skyline. I must take the window seat out of LGA and the aisle seat out of JFK 🙂
CONTINUE PLEASE – KEEPS ME AWAKE WAITING TO SEE WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO DO NEXT.
I’m working on it every day! 🙂
Oh darling, that picture took my breath away! It must be framed!!!
Thank you Andi! I don’t really have a place to frame and hang my travel photos at this stage in life… but I very much look forward to creating a photo wall someday with all my travel pics!
it looks like the earth is off its axis…..but nice imagery….where is that plane off to????
Somewhere exotic 🙂
Gorgeous photo! I finally made it to Rockaway Beach on a visit to NYC last summer–it’s such a great oasis, so close to the city!
I loved it! I think I’m going to break chronological order and put that post up soon so that I can encourage others to go!
Good call–it’s a hidden gem!
