It feels like much more than seven days have passed since the last Photo of the Week! That might have something to do with the face that in that time span we’ve explored Cusco, conquered the famed Inca Trail, and spent a night recovering in Aguas Calientes.
You might be surprised not to see any photos of the Machu Picchu postcard view. On the fourth day of the Inca Trail we arrived at the site to a thick white fog that clung stubbornly around the ancient city. I actually took this turn of luck surprisingly well — I guess it’s hard to be disappointed when you’ve just accomplished such a pride-inducing physical feat, and checked something off your bucket list to boot.
The next week will bring us down to Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, and across to Arequipa, Peru’s second largest city.
A & C Composition rules! Hi Zoe!
Zoe says hi back 🙂
Photo C! So fun that you and Zoe are on this adventure together!!
Yes, I feel very lucky to have checked off a major bucket list item with one of my closest friends!
Hi! I did fill out your reader survey but I realised something that I should have added – I’d love to see a post for each country about how you get around there i.e. the type of transport, costs, your experiences of it (e.g. the joys of Honduran chicken buses) and where you got information on bus times etc.
Hey Kat! I’m actually trying to work that into posts now using “essential info” boxes at the end of destination posts, ie: Iquitos and Lima. Hopefully it will help!
C….you get the message of this is not your normal hiking adventure and Zoe is in it. B is strong second because I am sucker for a good dog picture.
You would love it in Cusco… dogs everywhere! This one was one of my favorites (not as cute as Tucker though.)
This is one of the best photo series you had posted, Alex! I love South America! Any photo here can be photo of the week. But, having only one photo to select, that’s Photo B.
As a huge fan of Polaroid, I am wondering what camera and film used for a frame in Photo C. I’ve recently used the film from “The Impossible”, but the colors are not as good.
I believe Zoe got that Polaroid camera about two years ago, so it’s whatever the current model was then. I’ll have to ask her for details on the film!
Thanks, Alex!
The polaroid is from a Fuji instax mini. It’s a cute little modern polaroid camera. They sell specific film cartridges for the camera (instax mini film). You can also purchase a wide format version of the camera which is the instax 210.
Not sure if she has the same one I have, but the film looks exactly the same as mine and I have the Fujifilm Mini Instax 8. Like a Polaroid but different sized photos and made by Fujifilm! They also have another instant camera that’s a bit larger 🙂

Photo C for sure… & then D 😉 x
Glad there’s some love for the llama!
A or B as they capture the characters of the city in a unique way. Congratulations to you for both for completing the Inca Trail – I know how hard it can be and am looking forward to reading your write up!
Thanks Yasemin! It was a struggle for me but worth every step!
Photo C for sure! Such a cool shot!
Thanks Sky! We like to get a little creative here… two art school kids 🙂
They are all AMAZING!!!!!! Such a shame about MP. Guess you just gotta go back now?
I certainly wouldn’t mind that! You know I love to return to my favorite places…
Photo A. has such lovely atmosphere and light!
Although I do have a soft spot for Llamas too!
Thanks Jade! I was overwhelmed trying to photograph Cusco, and I was so happy when I saw those two shots.
I like photo B… I was such a sucker for all the dogs in Peru. Did you see all the hairless ones at the markets in Iquitos??
Those are SO WEIRD. We’ve seen them sporadically all over the country. Bizarre little animals!
C!!
Also I have to say I LOVE how you’ve been updating in real time… I never really thought about how photo of the week was usually the only way for us to know what your travels were like at the present moment until you mentioned that people asked for posts to be closer to real time on the survey. I don’t know how you’ve been able to accomplish the writing and editing so quickly on the road, but it’s awesome and I’ve loved every Peru post!
Well, let’s just say I average around 5-6 hours of sleep per night! Ha. It has been stressful but I am enjoying blogging more closely to “real time.” Let’s see if I can keep it up, though!
I am going to go for D. The llama looks like a professional.
Ha, you’re right — all the llamas in this town seem to have gone to modeling school!
C! Unique photo with cool composition.
Thanks Cat! That’s what happens when you get two art school kids together…
Aw I love photo B. As an animal lover I like to pretend all the dogs running around in the streets of other countries are well fed and spoiled by all the locals hehe. The llamas a close second tho.
I love street dogs the world over! Actually the ones in Cusco look pretty darn happy 🙂
I’m going with A this week, such a perfect capturing of a simple moment in time 🙂
Thanks Hannah! It’s a quiet one — I like it 🙂
I’m intrigued by C, very creative!
Thanks for voting, Amanda!
I don’t know what it is but I just love the pictures of animals. All the animals please!
I know… I actually had a THIRD animal picture in the running for this week, but had to cool it in the end 🙂
Photo A. Something about it just says South America to me
Love that 🙂 Thanks for voting, Breanna!
Wow, Alex! This has got to be one of the finest selection of pictures I’ve yet seen in your Photo of the Week series. Very well done. Each picture is intriguing and not just a cool sight (though they are that, as well). I really like C and E.
Thanks Andy! I always love seeing which photos and sets people respond to. I wasn’t expecting this one to be quite so popular!
oh my.. ! after these images and posts.. Peru is on MY bucket list 😀
and about the photos.. for me, the bests are A and C 🙂
Thanks Anna! Glad to see Peru made it on your list… it deserves a spot! 🙂
Love photo D – animal pics always win for me!
Couldn’t agree more 🙂
C! I’m excited, currently planning an abroad trip with one of my bests too!
Traveling with friends from home is such a treat! Have fun planning your next journey 🙂
I love photo C and D. That Lama is so adorable! 🙂
