This travel quote struck me deeply the moment I read it. I mulled it over and over in my head, repeating it to friends and waiting to hear their thoughts.

Don’t tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you traveled. -Mohammed

As someone who has spent more of her life in an educational institution than out of one, I’d like to think that formal education has some hefty value. But at the same time, nothing has moved me to change my habits and lifestyle in the way that the lessons I learned traveling did. I think perhaps the best education is one that combines traditional knowledge with the self-discovery and world-awareness that travel brings.

What do you think?

Lifetime learning means all forms of education from school based to life experiences. You are getting some extraordinary experiences by traveling and I would bet your school based education is helping you appreciate and see more than you would have otherwise.

Travel use to be a required part of a young man’s education. . . their Grand Tour.

I’ve never heard of this Grand Tour! I’m going to have to do some research, clearly.

LOVE this quote, thanks for sharing it. I really like what your Dad commented too. It really encourages me to work more at actually travelling then just educating myself about travel though it is useful for dreaming!

Daydreaming, planning, researching, and reading about/obsessing over a place I’m going to go (or maybe even have no immediate plans to go to!) is one of my favorite pastimes

I’ve come across this quote before and I LOVE IT! πŸ˜€ Couldn’t agree more. You can sit through lectures and study a place, but it doesn’t compare to setting foot in a country and learning first hand from your own experiences.

So true! I always say that no matter how much reading or research I do I don’t get a place until I’m there and can “feel” it.

    Hi everybody,

there is definitely a good point in this quote, no matter how much you read and you learn in school and in other similar institutions you can never get as much as when you travel because travelling means so many things: is the reality you are confronting, you gain knowledge and it is easily printed in your memory, you deal with new people and you have to adapt yourself to circumstances.

I remember we were taught in school about a fairy tale where an old king had three sons and he tried to figure out which one of them was suitable to inherit his throne; so he thought to send them on a journey in a far land to his brother. The youngest of the brothers succeed while the others gave up from the very beginning. So he proved to be brave enough to get the throne.
