Capture The Color
I think I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time in my life thinking about color. First I went to art school and spent years mixing the perfect shade, breaking it down into pieces and putting it on a chart — sometimes literally. Then I became an avid photographer and underwater videographer and chained myself to my computer trying to find the perfect color balance. And don’t even get me started on trying to find the right shade of blonde.
So I’m kind of excited about today’s post, my entry in Travel Supermarket’s Capture The Colour Photo Contest. I had fun going through my archives and picking out my entries, all while daydreaming about what I’d do with the amazing prize of an iPad (for category winners) or about $3,000 (overall prize). Some incredibly talented photographers have entered and I almost didn’t even bother, but then I gave myself one of those out-loud little pep talks that makes random passersby cross the street as you walk towards them — “You have to enter to win!!!”
Without further ado, my entries:
White
I snapped this photo before going for a horseback ride outside Reykjavik, Iceland. I wasn’t trying to be clever or creative… it was just one of those cases where the picture created itself.
Blue
It seems Iceland really inspired me! This photo is from my diving trip to Silfra. Never in my life have I seen visibility or vibrant color like this underwater.
Green
Beautiful, beautiful Laos — I love the way this photo from my hot air balloon ride uses shadow to show several shades of green.
Yellow
After coming up from a night dive in the Bahamas, I was struck by the surreal sight of black water and a yellow, dusky sky.
Red
While on a roadtrip in the SnΓ¦fellsnes Pennisula in Iceland, I couldn’t stop screaming for the car to be pulled over so I could take pictures of horses. I was obsessed! These vibrant punksters are the coolest embodiment of red I’ve ever seen.

I’m supposed to nominate five fellow bloggers but I fear I’ve left this so last minute that my nominations are kind of useless. However, I’m a crazy rule follower and afraid of getting disqualified so I’m re-nominating the people who nominated me. Judges have mercy.
Thanks to the following bloggers for their nominations!
And for my final “nomination,” my favorite entry so far!
Wish me luck!
That Blue picture is incredible!
Thank you Emily…. hopefully the judges think so too! π
The blue is amazing!
Seems to be the crowd favorite… hopefully it wins me an iPad!
They’re all fantastic, but the yellow one is my favorite – devastatingly beautiful. You definitely deserve to be in this contest! Good luck π
Thank you! I love that photo! And I also LOVE your blog which I recently discovered! I always said if I was going to live in a city in Southeast Asia (instead of a beach) it would be Phnom Penh. I love that place.
Eee – that’s so exciting that you’ve checked out my blog! Thank you for the lovely comment! π
I agree about Phnom Penh – the city just has such energy, and it’s so easy to be happy here. I’m thinking I might stay for awhile!
Well then perhaps we will meet upon my inevitable return π I had a great time with the boys who run Mad Monkey hostel, do you know them? The expat scene is so small there! I’m planning on heading back to Southeast Asia in December, I think. By the way, have you been rollerskating on the top floor of Sorya Mall? I tell everyone its a must do in PP. But then again I have a strange idea of fun sometimes!
Would love to meet up when next you’re back kickin it in this city! I don’t know the guys who run Mad Monkey, but I do know Mad Monkey because it’s a few blocks from my house and is on my running route. Will have to stop in… the specials on their menu board always make my mouth water as I’m speeding past them! π
I have NEVER heard of the rollerskating and now I am pretty sure that’s what I would like for my birthday party. Sounds like a riot! Cheers for the suggestion!!
LOVE the red photo!
Thanks Vicky! I see you’ve recently entered as well… good luck!
Blue blue blue
You should have come along and seen it for yourself π
WOW–that blue is really BLUE! You are so right: Iceland is a color-lover’s dream. I’m obsessing over those ponies, though. Hoping to see some Heilan Coos of the same color in Scotland next month…
I’m so excited for your trip to Scotland! Wish I was going with you, I know so many great people there. I hope you are spending some time in one of my fave cities — Glasgow!
Wishing you luck!
Thanks Michel… best of luck for your entries as well!
Loooooooove these pics!!! I didn’t nominate you, because I thought you had been nominated already, but you were #1 on my list. I wanted to see your pics so badly. I wish that I had been in Iceland with a better camera and more time. You’re SO talented!
Ha don’t worry girl, as you can see I was swimming in nominations already! And look at me… last minute as always π
Love all of them but especially the blue and yellow one. The yellow one is so dramatic and it is totally something I would frame and put in my appartment. Good Luck, Alex!
Thank you Caty! Blue and yellow definitely seem to be the favorites.
Maybe I’m too old for this, but I really find that after considering it for a while, I really like the white the best. Gram E
That’s one of my favorites too π
i think that was a pretty good series of shots, the yellow one was my favorite!
Thanks Gregory! I absolutely love your blog name, its fantastic!
If black were a category, your yellow photo would win it for me. The water is amazing!
Ha yeah it definitely could be black as much as yellow… hopefully the judges will take a creative interpretation π
LOVE the RED photo..amazing..I love animal SO much:)
Thanks! I was definitely obsessed with the Icelandic horses as well; they are beautiful!
It’s cool to see a “red” picture that is not just another Grand Canyon shot. I wish you luck for the contest.
Hey Geoff, yes there are definitely some color cliches that come out in a contest like this! I think I definitely succumbed to the blue cliche with an underwater shot π
the underwater photo looks amazing. and the horses, too. great set!
Thanks Paul! Fingers crossed!
Love the horses – they’re so cute! And that picture of the diving in Iceland is unreal! I’ll have to check out that dive when I’m there next summer.
Definitely! And even if you aren’t certified you can snorkel in the same spot. I’ve got posts coming up about both horseback riding and diving in Iceland π
yellow is stunning !!!
Thanks Angela! That’s one of my favorites as well!
Amazing pictures, but I especially love the red one. That’s a great perspective and I love that the horses seem styled to resemble an Asian boy band.
Haha, I love that comparison! So true.
Alex, they are all great but I think the yellow one is most striking
It’s definitely very dramatic. Let me know if you want a copy!
I think your yellow might win. I can almost feel the mood thru the pic. And thanks for the mention. π
You’re so welcome… thanks for the nomination!
The BLUE is so amazing …its a prize winning shot for sure!!
Waiting to hear about the results!
Me too! Can’t wait to see the winners!
You yellow is beautifully eerie! Loving it!
Thanks Kiki! That seems to be a crowd favorite π
Beautiful and interesting collection.
Thanks Kathryn! You spell your name the same way my mother does π
