Coney Island has long been one of my favorite places in New York. I regret that I didn’t start blogging earlier, because I have so many happy memories on this unique little beach that I’d love to share. But this weekend, I got to make some new ones. Finally, finally, after years of a conflicting schedule, I was in town for the Coney Island Mermaid Parade!
This celebration of summer and skin was dreamed up thirty years ago by some of the artists and quirky characters that call Coney home. I have hundreds of photos to share about this unique holiday, so look for a full post coming up this month. For now, I’ll just say that I couldn’t dream up a better way to spend a sunny Saturday than to bum rush the beach with several thousand fellow New Yorkers, dressed as one of my favorite sea creatures.

Which photo is your favorite this week?
F!! Makes me wanna go!
PHOTO D! I am a huge fan of street portraits 🙂
And I was a major fan of their hats 🙂
E…looks like a giant spider….
Ick, I thought that too when I posted it. Which almost stopped me from doing so 🙂
I have to say B, he is loving life!!!!
If one this was video of the week, and you could see how he was dancing!
A, duh. Who’s that hottie?
jk….I really like B. Don’t remember seeing him—- there were too many creatures to catch them all!!
That hottie is my creative and brilliant and beautiful bestie 🙂
hahahah photo B all the way
F! 🙂
Photo D! Who doesn’t love an octopus hat?!
E ALL THE WAY
F! All the way. Makes me want to be there!
Funny, that’s two people saying that same thing now! I guess crowds are enticing to some people after all 🙂
B for sure, love how into it he is with the casual supermarket in the background!
How do you find all these crazy events?!
When I hear about things like this I become kind of obsessed 🙂 They lodge in my brain and sit there until I get the chance to go years later!
C! I love her pink wig, and how all the rides line the background. It’s hilarious though that the audience’s attention is elsewhere and there’s that random guy running towards it.
E next!
Ha, I can’t even remember what was back there!
This is awesome!
Thanks Danny!
OMG! I’ve been to Coney Island once and it was kind of low season. All the fun fair stuff was closed and we could hardly find anything to eat! I wish we had been there on a more busy day… The thing I remember the most was that my friend and me were asked for a “romantic date at the airport” by some dodgy Eastern-European guys… Oh dear! It was a fun day but nothing at all what we’ve expected!
Ha oh my gosh. Yes, maybe return in the summer 🙂 It’s one of my favorite places in New York! So fun and kitschy. I adore it!
