Happy Easter, if you’re one of those who spent the day eating chocolate shaped like bunnies or dying eggs funky colors! I’ve always loved Easter weekend as a time to connect with family and friends over a good meal, do all the crafting, and celebrate the arrival of Spring. While Thailand isn’t a traditionally Easter-celebrating country, I managed to tick several of those boxes this weekend with a girl’s weekend away in Koh Samui.
We planned the trip around running a Midnight 5K, something I’d loved doing last year in Bangkok. This time, instead of “training” by consuming fast food and partying for three days straight, I thought I’d go the more traditional route of actually doing practice runs and see how that would go. Turns out, it’s a solid strategy! I managed to talk a couple girlfriends from Koh Tao into joining me, and we headed over to our neighboring isle for a few days of giggling by the pool, dragging ourselves across a finish line, and toasting to our friendship with a fun Easter Sunday brunch.
The photos I took were mostly of the silly and/or sweaty selfie variety, which left little options for Photo of the Week. But I did manage a few civilized snaps of our beautiful brunch this morning, which gives you a little more of a peek at our weekend (more to come on Facebook and Instagram — and of course the blog — too!)
Happy Sunday! How did you spend your weekend?
Eating a chocolate bunny now! But you won’t see me running any races anytime soon, lol!
Believe me… I hardly recognize myself!
The weather is slowly starting to change in Scandinavia so I’m definitely with you on welcoming spring! Happy Easter, Alex 🙂
Enjoy the changing of the seasons, Miriam!
Happy Easter! Well done you, we’re in Budapest, everything is bread, fat or more fat. Can’t wait to exercise again, although the spa is calling!
I always think of the spa as a reward for working out… yes, let’s say that’s how I justify my two-massage-a-week habit 🙂
For the first time, my Easter was spent with friends instead of family, but we kept a few traditions alive… like having a big feast (shawarma platters) and having an Easter egg hunt around the house (except our Easter eggs were actually mini wine bottles). I’m glad you were able to still have a weekend that felt like Easter!
Um, your Easter sounds AMAZING and you just filled me with regret for not finding something to hide around the hotel room and make the girls run around and look for on Easter morning… #nextyear
Happy Easter! 5k is so impressive! I saw you did it in 33 mins, wow! I started hiking as an exercise, which I really like because it allows me to be slow and take pictures 🙂
Hiking will always have my heart… running I just tolerate 🙂 I know how good it is for me though, so I do force myself to do it. Having a run to train for definitely helps!
Is this a travel website anymore? Reads More like a Kardashian blog lately…..losing focus.
Yup, still a travel blog! Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy this particular piece of free content I provided. Photo of the Week has always been a quick snapshot of where I am and what I’ve been up to.
If you’re looking for something more adventure-focused, might I direct you to my posts about my recent campervan road trip around the American Southwest? If you’re looking for something inspirational, perhaps my post on how travel opened up my culinary world might be up your alley. If you’re looking for something informational, how about my guide to absentee voting abroad? In all seriousness, I value feedback from my readers greatly, but I don’t even know what “a Kardashian blog” is.
The only comparison you can make between this site, and the Kardashian’s, is that your comment is akin to the kind of negative trolling they battle with regularly.
Happy Easter Alex! The holiday was spent cooking, eating, and laughing and chatting with friends and family. The best part was seeing a family member I only get to see about 5 weeks a year!!!
That sounds blissful Cate. Love me some family time!
Nice one! I spent Easter hiking here in New Zealand. Such a bonus having four days in a row off work! 🙂
Nice! That is indeed a serious bonus — and what a way to spend it!
Not related, but I just received my first ever subscription email from PADI and you were featured! Somehow that got me very excited.
Back on topic, I spent Easter exploring Borneo. Will be heading off to polish my newly gained diving skills at Gaya Island this coming weekend. I hope I’ll enjoy it as much as I did Koh Tao!
I got super excited when I saw that too, Jael 😀 And, um, BORNEO!? Color me green with envy — can’t want to get there someday!
The Malaysian Ringgit is pretty low right now, so it’s a good time to visit xD
But!!! If mountain climbing is your thing, you might want to make sure you have a spot for Mount Kinabalu booked before landing in Sabah.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll keep that in mind when I eventually return…
Happy Easter!! And well done on your 5K too! Glad you still found time to celebrate with an Easter brunch with your girlfriends 🙂 My friends and I planned a beach day, but spent our Easter weekend gorging on chocolate bunnies and easter eggs instead.
Thanks Thia! I was pretty darn proud! I do wish I’d found a chocolate bunny to celebrate with after, though…
Love reading your blogs, and even at this advanced age, I hope to see some of the world myself, so I’m paying avid attention. Have one request: You take beautiful pics of food, but could you take a sec to tell me what it is? I can usually identify rice, and know when it’s some-kind-of bread. And sometimes I can guess from the name (though not in Thai), but I’d really love to know just what a dish is made of!
Absolutely! This was a poached eggs and avocado on toast creation with some fun extras like bacon and rocket. A Western treat for a bunch of Thailand expats 🙂
You give us so many positive feeling & merci pour ce tres ))
Vous êtes le bienvenu Annet 🙂
Love your blog Alex. I realise you must get this question alot but I’m planning a trip to Koh Tao in August/September and would love to hear your opinion on the diving conditions at that time of year, in particular in regards to visibility. Many thanks
I ACTUALLY enjoy your photos and adventures with zoe. oh, i hope to read more about her visit in thailand especially what u girls got up to in the islands.
I will definitely be posting more in detail about all these adventures eventually, Julia!
Hi Alex, Love your blog Alex. Even i am planning a trip to Koh Tao in July. Thanks for sharing.
