This week I made my way back down to the heart of Thailand after my extended exploration up North. En route I stopped for two days in the ancient capital of Sukhothai, which I’ve been wanting to visit since my trips to Ayutthaya and Lopburi last year. Then I made my way to Bangkok, from where I write you now. Bangkok is one of my favorite cities in the world, and it feels like home to be back here. Last night I checked out the Talad Rot Fai night market and it melted my heart — vintage wares, painfully hip people, and tons of delicious street food to snack on. Can’t wait to post more about it!
Tomorrow, I have a flight booked to the Philippines. Can we be real for a minute here? I’m kind of in panic mode here — to the point that I’m not sure I’m going to get on that plane. Am I really ready to leave Thailand? I’m really torn, going back and forth every minute –and it’s a horrible feeling. Do I want to explore somewhere new, stay put somewhere fabulous and familiar, or what the heck — go travel to Vietnam or Cambodia or Laos and see all the bits I missed last time. I guess you’ll see from next week’s Photo of the Week what I decided to do!
I loved the gold painted nails on many of the Buddhas in Sukhothai — I’d never seen them on that scale anywhere else in Thailand.
This hilltop wat was the perfect place to watch the sun set.
This Buddha in Wat Sri Chum made the entire trip to Sukhothai worthwhile — I did not want to tear myself away.
More images from the historical park.
Some of the goods on sale at the Talad Rot Fai market.
Another colorful display at the market.
Exotic snacks on display at the market, photo on the right snapped by Wes.

I like the statues among the roots in Photo D. What are the dohickies in Photo E?
I’m pretty sure they are colorful hanging lampshades!
Go to the Philippines!! Most gorgeous place on earth (and I’ve been to all the other countries you’re considering). You won’t regret it 🙂
I’m definitely heading there within the month, it was just a matter of going now or later 🙂 Excited by your endorsement!
I’m torn between A and E! I love the colors in E and how it speaks to the market culture, but the gold nails crack me up.
I know right?! I loved that too. It’s really fun to see all the regional differences in things like this.
Oh, I like photo C! Good luck deciding. We just got to Bangkok today.
Welcome to Bangkok Rachel! I LOVE this city, hope you will too 🙂
There are 2 Fs. The one on the right in f.2 is probably the best photograph ever taken.
Funny, when I glanced at this comment I thought you were referring to an F-stop 🙂
Great photos! I love how the sky compliments the statues in photo B.
Me too! A bit of HDR magic at work there 🙂
Hmmmm really hard to choose…going to go with D!
Love that one! You would go photo crazy in Sukhothai, Andi! You’ve got to get there someday 🙂
Phew,…that was close….
Love your enthusiasm 🙂
Ooh, A! Great shot–and I’m glad to hear you liked Sukhothai. We really enjoyed exploring it as well! I’m looking forward to hearing what you decide to do next. I’m in Laos for another 10 days or so, then heading to Vietnam…
Hint — I’m still in Thailand 🙂
