On one of my three plane rides to Scotland, I was reading through a few copies of the New York Times Travel section that I had saved for this very occasion. Pico Ayer, one of my favorite travel writers, had written a front page editorial called “Why We Travel” and the paper received so many excellent letters in response that they published several of them in future editions as part of a series.

I was in the process of writing my Goodbye New York piece when I came upon the following quote:

If you’re a truly lucky traveler, you won’t be the same person when you get home.

-Patrick Bredehoft
From a letter to the New York Times Travel Section

I can’t think of a better quote to sum up my feelings as I embark on my own Great Escape. I can only hope that whenever the day comes that I return home, I will be a bit warmer, and a bit wiser, and a bit more open to the world.

Stay tuned!
