Am I the only one that feels like pre-trip daydreaming is one of the best parts of a travel?

You guys might remember that last fall, I signed up for Trover and used it to help me decide whether Central America or Southeast Asia would be my next stop. (Non spoiler alert! Central ‘Merica won.) For those of you not yet on the Trovewagon, it’s basically the super addictive love child of Instagram, Pinterest, a guidebook, and that really well-dressed-and-traveled friend of a friend that you always email for tips when you’re heading somewhere new. Or, in less orgy-related terms, Trover is a social media based travel planning tool in which users share discoveries, which fellow users can curate into inspirational lists for their own future travels.

Trover for Travel Planning

Right now, I’m using Trover to do two of my favorite things — plan upcoming trips and give you guys a preview of them. As usual, I can’t wait to hear your tip and ideas, and what you’re most excited to hear about from me.

In comparison to my current Central America wanderings, which are deliciously unplanned and spontaneous, my summer plans for the next four months are pretty definitively mapped out. And there are a lot of them — but it’s going to be the best kind of busy. I’m so energized looking at my upcoming calendar! As usual, New York will be my base camp while I wander, with my “home” time split between Albany and Brooklyn. Here’s what else is on the docket:

1 // New York State Scramble // Corning, Rochester and Ithaca

I always say that summer is my time to explore my own backyard, but I admit that statement is a bit of a stretch with Los Angeles a good 3,000 miles from Albany. But this time, I really mean it — I’m hitting the road to spend some quality time with my own home state of New York. It all started with my annual itch to go see my older sister in Rochester — and quickly snowballed to include stops to try glass blowing at the famous museum in Corning, and to go glamping in the famed gorgeous gorges of Ithaca (and heck yes I am buying that t-shirt!) And I timed the whole thing so that I’ll be able to attend both Albany’s Tulip Fest and Rochester’s Lilac version — festivities will include my first ever 10K. Wish me luck!

New York State Scramble – a photo list by Alexandra BaackesTrover Take: Not only did I definitively add Watkin’s Glen Waterfall to the Corning itinerary after seeing the Trover affinity for it, to my shock I even spotted a few places I need to check out in Albany! Try searching for your own hometown — you might be surprised what you find.

2 // My Old Classic // Martha’s Vineyard

It really amazes me how after twenty years of trips here, I still swoon at just the thought of Martha’s Vineyard. My old childhood vacation spot has taken over a whole new corner of my heart since my mom started making a home here. This summer, I have two trips planned — one with friends, and one with family — and a third up in the air. My major goal while I’m there this time is to write a budget guide for the island — I want everyone to experience Martha’s Vineyard! Martha’s Vineyard Memories – a photo list by Alexandra Baackes

Trover’s Take: There aren’t many discoveries for Martha’s Vineyard — which means it’s a place I’ll be focusing on adding a few tips for this summer! What I did find, however, was that a side trip to Falmouth needs to be in my future. Who knew all this cuteness was just a ferry ride away? Actually, that’s one of my favorite things about Trover — because of the way discoveries are arranged by distance from your intended destination, it’s easy to stumble upon must-do side trips that you otherwise might not have known about.

3 // Swinging South // Nashville and Lexington

Even before I became rabidly obsessed with the TV show by the same name, Nashville has topped my list of US cities I’m dying to visit. And this summer, I’ll finally get a first go at it — I’m going to go see my girl Kristin on her home turf! After a few days cruising around Music City, we’re heading to the Tennessee countryside to take on Bonaroo with a swoon-worthy crew including two of my favorite fellow writers, Kent and Canaan. I’ve developed a serious case of festival fever in the past few years, so I couldn’t be happier about checking out a new one — and doing it with such an awesome cast of characters to boot. (Speaking of boots — I need to acquire a kickass pair of cowgirl ones!)

Post-Bonaroo, we’ll trade those cowgirl boots for business suits and head to the PRSA’s 2015 Travel and Tourism conference in Lexington, Kentucky, where Kristin and I will both be speaking on panels. Two new states in one trip? Just thirty-one more to go!

Southern Swoop: Nashville and Lexington – a photo list by Alexandra BaackesTrover Take: While Kristin is basically the Queen of Nashville and I’m sure will have a fabulous itinerary planned, Trover uncovered a few places I will specially request, like Hatch Show Print letterpress shop and Jeni’s Ice Cream.

4 // Caribbean Queen // Bermuda, Bonaire and Aruba

The Caribbean is calling! I was always planning to end my current Central America trip with a week in Grand Cayman celebrating Batabano with travel bestie Heather — the perfect final stop en route to a summer stateside. Little did I know at the time it would be far from my only Caribbean island of the season! I made a conscious decision after my last blogaversary to be insanely picky with press trips and sponsored activities, and I’ve stuck to it, turning down truly amazing opportunities because they didn’t align just right with my goals or because they would have interfered with my independent travels. Which means that when I do say yes to something, it’s because it’s the perfect fit — like a diving trip to Bonaire with two of my favorite fellow mermaids, Kristin and Angie; or a weekend getaway to Bermuda, an unbelievably convenient hop from my summer base camp in New York. (Okay, technically Bermuda isn’t in the Caribbean… but it is an island floating around in that general-ish region. Close enough, no?) Bonaire has been on my diving bucket list for years, and I am giddy at the thought of a week spent exploring its waters — not to mention a couple days in Aruba afterwards to decompress. And Bermuda? I’ve been intrigued by it ever since I used to watch the Hamilton-bound cruise ships take off from Manhattan and marvel that the next day its inhabitants would be lounging on a pink sand beach. I’ll be staying in the newly renovated Fairmont Hamilton Princess — referred to locally as the Pink Palace — and can’t wait to soak up this classic slice of Bermuda. Caribbean Calling – a photo list by Alexandra Baackes

Trover Take: I was pleasantly surprised by how many discoveries there were for these tiny little islands! As my go-to guidebook series Lonely Planet doesn’t publish individual titles on the three, it was great to get a feel and overview for where I’m headed. Another bonus — some of the Trovers who uploaded great discoveries also linked to blog posts that I checked out with even more great info. Must sees? The salt flats in Bonaire (I’m a certified sodium addict), the pet cemetery in Aruba (morbid but sweet!), the crystal caves in Bermuda (even I need a break from the sun sometimes), and anywhere I can snap colorful photos of pink beaches or flamingos — Trover provides great inspiration for travel photographer.

5 // West is Best // All over!

One piece of news that will definitely be reshaping my stateside time over the next few years: my dad moved to LA! He was actually meant to retire this year but when an incredible career opportunity popped up, he decided to kiss Philadelphia goodbye (for now) and head west. And I’ll be following — I already have two trips planned to the City of Angels. One will be a quick jaunt for Father’s Day, but the other will be part of a much larger excursion. Because this summer…

…I’m going back to Burning Man! And this round, I’m going to make the most of my time in the region. In addition to Black Rock City, I’ll hit up Reno, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and maybe even Seattle or San Francisco — I’m so lucky to have friends and family in so many amazing cities.

West is Best – a photo list by Alexandra BaackesTrover Take: First of all, can I say how impressed I am by the number of Troving Burners out there? Seeing their discoveries got me super excited to make my way back to the Playa. Also, out of all the cities I looked into, Trover is a goldmine for LA. I have to admit that despite never having been, I’ve always disliked LA in theory. And as excited as I’ve been for my dad, the idea of having him so far away from my normal US base camp has been hard to get used to (selfish, I know, when I spend so little time there). But I can honestly say, browsing through Trover was the first time I got genuinely excited about it. I can’t wait to check out some of these hidden gems — from restaurants to street art districts to cool architecture hotspots — with my dad.

6 // Newfoundland

I’m still throwing around dates and looking at flights for this one. But if all goes well, I’ll be making my first serious jaunt to Canada this summer. Considering Canadians are pretty universally accepted to be the nicest people in the world, I find it very telling that whenever Newfoundland comes up in conversation, everyone feels the need to point out that the people there are so nice! Snorkeling with whales, wandering the colorful streets of St. John, and hiking my heart out? Yes please. Finding Newfoundland – a photo list by Alexandra Baackes

Trover Take: In addition to the visual gems that had me basically packing my passport already, that famous Newfoundland niceness popped up even on Trover — within a day of me starting to put together my list, I had two friendly comments pop up, one from a local Trover offering any advice or travel planning help I might need.

. . . . . . . .

It’s going to be an amazing summer, and I’m literally squirming with excitement already. So… let’s hear it! What are your summer plans? Which of mine are you most excited to read about? Any post requests?

And I can’t wait to hear your tips and tricks — even better, upload them to Trover for everyone to enjoy. Share by signing up on Trover.com or downloading the app on Android or iPhone — and don’t forget to #TroveOn with me, too. Leave a link to your profile in the comments here so I can follow you!

Hi! No idea how our paths haven’t crossed yet but they should! I’m from Rochester and am moving to the vineyard for the summer! I totally agree that it’s a magical place that is completely undiscovered in the traveling world. I’d love to connect at some point!

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

That is amazing Megan! What are you going to be doing in MV? I can’t wait to get back there!

        April 29 2015

I’m waitressing at a bar/restaurant in Oak Bluffs, to bank away some money for my future trips! So jealous you have a place you can always go there. It’s one of my life goals to own property there so I can always hide away on MV whenever I want.

Awesome! Maybe I will run into you there this summer 🙂

    April 27 2015

Wow, awesome, action packed adventures await Alex!
I totally agree, pre-trip planning is one of my favourite parts. I’m going on my first extended solo trip this summer (to Estonia, Latvia and a quick stop over in Finland) and I was starting to feel a little anxious and overwhlemed by it all. Yesterday I spent pretty much the whole afternoon reading my guidebook, mooching on the Internet and on various apps and making notes and now I couldn’t be more jazzed about it!

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

I love that breakthrough moment, Caity! When you suddenly tuck in and do a bit of research and then suddenly a trip seems exciting instead of mystifying 🙂 Congrats on what sounds like an unbelievable adventure!

I don’t really think it’s possible to choose the most exciting one of your travel plans!? I mean they all sound pretty incredible.
When you mentioned LA on Facebook I felt like I was stalking you being in your footsteps in Malta last summer and this year LA 🙂
I had completely forgotten about Trover so that was a great reminder!

Ha! Okay, well if it happens next year we’ll have to have a talk…. 😛 Just kidding. Hopefully we actually overlap one of these trips!

Sounds like a packed summer full of fun!! I can’t believe you’ll be in Lexington – KY is my home state! I hope you’ll have some time to explore (maybe try some of our famous bourbon!). 😀

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

Oh believe me, with Kristin Luna as my travel buddy there will be bourbon whether I like it or not! We are definitely planning on doing a little exploring while we’re there. I can’t wait!

Katie, I will make sure she drinks her share! Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace visits are on the agenda (not to mention, a number of bars and restaurants in Lex). Though Alex and I both always welcome any local’s suggestions =)

Jeni’s Ice Cream is actually a Columbus, Ohio original known for unusual flavors, but it’s crazy popular here so I bet the Nashville location will be good also 🙂

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

Interesting! Well, I am all about ice cream research, Anne. Maybe I’ll have to try both locations eventually to compare 🙂

    • Camels & Chocolate
      May 6 2015

True, though Jeni Britton Bauer has definitely made Nashville her second home! I’ve had the Columbus variety and tasted my way through all three Nashville locations (not to mention Atlanta, too), and I can vouch that no quality was lost while traveling across state borders 😉

(Though let’s not tell Alex that currently ALL Jeni’s ice cream is recalled! Hopefully they’ll be up and running again by mid-June…)

I’m super excited to read about your trip to Rochester. I’m not exactly from there, but it’s the place I’ve lived the longest. It will be interesting to see it through a traveler’s eyes!

    • Alex

I’m from NY too and I just need to once again vouch for the waterfalls in Watkins Glen. Amazing.

I can’t wait to read about all of your travels this summer! You’re fully booked!

I’m off to Spain in a couple weeks and Milwaukee after that, but then I need to buckle down and show up to my full-time gig for awhile. 🙂 Will be camping around Pennsylvania this summer and surely making some short trips to NY to see family.

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

Spain sounds lovely! And thank you for the Watkins Glen thumbs up — I’m very excited to lay eyes on this New York State gem. In general, I can’t wait to do a little home state exploring.

I’m an Ithacan! Please let me know if you need food/lodging recommendations or would like someone to host a meet up. We have more restaurants per capita than NYC – so there’s a lot of foood to try and gorges to see. I’m a fellow travel gal working at Cornell University.

I’m going to Turkey in the near future and your blog has been helpful!

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

Hey Sarah! I already have lodging arranged — I’m staying at Firelight Camps and so pumped about it! — but I’d LOVE any restaurant recommendations you want to throw my way! And love that food factoid. Who would have guessed!?

Such a wonderful place to stay – It’s connected to a great Spa.

Here are my favorite place to eat:
        Northstar Pub
        Agava
        Ithaca Beer Company
        Just a Taste
        Saigon Kitchen

If you are going on a wine tour ( try to do a boat wine tour!) while you are in the area – the burgers at the Thirsty Owl Winery are amazing.

Hooray, LA! I find that nearly everyone hates LA at first — it’s really difficult to get to like the city unless you find it’s hidden gems, which is practically impossible on short trips or when hitting up the more well-known spots. I hated LA when I first moved out here, but now that I’ve gotten to really know it’s secrets, I love it here! I can’t wait to read about your experiences, and I can’t wait to check out Trover and discover even more!!

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

I guess that’s a cool thing about Trover — it gets you to the “hidden gem stage” much more quickly! I’m really looking forward to getting to know it with my dad.

It sounds jam-packed but awesome! I will be in North America this summer too in Hawaii (Kauai and Oahu), Seattle, British Columbia and Alaska – can’t wait! Jealous you are heading to Newfoundland, I didn’t make it that far up on my 4 month Canada trip in Summer 2013 – furtherest we got was Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia which was beautiful

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

Ahhhh, HAWAII! So jealous you’re headed to one of my favorite spots. Enjoy every second of aloha!

Super excited for your posts on Upstate NY (where my hometown is too!), Bonaire (where I’ve been dying to do sea turtle conservation work), and the West (where I moved to and currently live). Sounds like a busy but incredible summer! And much warmer than mine–I just landed a seasonal job as a camera tech with marine mammals waaay up in Barrow, Alaska. Safe to say I’ll be gazing enviously at your sun-filled photos through my parka’s hood.

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

Oh my gosh Joy I just stalked every discovery you’ve ever uploaded. We’ve been to a lot of the same places and looks like we’re dreaming of some similar ones too! Where in Upstate NY are you from? And wow, what an amazing job you’ve got coming up. Keep rocking it girl!

        April 29 2015

Haha thanks! I’m from a tiny town in Schoharie County (the Cobleskill/Middleburgh/Schoharie area), and often went to the malls around Albany and the tulip fest and the holiday lights in the park. 🙂

  • I’m excited to read about all your stateside adventures (being an Aussie the US is an exotic land far away) but I’m most excited to see what you might find in LA. I’ve been twice, and I’m off for a third visit this October. Though the tourist stuff isn’t that exciting, I have this feeling LA is the kind of place that has tons of pleasantly surprising gems if you take the time to get to know it.

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

I started to get that impression as well when I was browsing through all these amazing finds on Trover! I’m pretty pumped to already have a long list of restaurants I want to try, neighborhoods I want to visit and art I want to see.

Oh, how I love making lists! Combing Trover for inspiration is now a solid part of my pre-trip ritual 🙂

  • I haven’t heard of this app yet, but just opened to check it out! Thanks for the tips. And, yes, planning is so much fun! I’m even planning my October and December break trips now 🙂

I can relate! Though nothing is booked, in my head I’m definitely thinking all the way through the end of 2015 as well. Can’t stop these wheels from turning!

  • Exciting summer plans! That’s so awesome your dad moved to L.A! I’m actually moving to LA myself in the Summer (hence just changed my blog name- having “Beijing” in the title wasn’t going to work anymore..!). I finally got my US residency all sorted and can’t wait to move to the US (I was going to say permanently but couldn’t count on it with my wanderlust haha)! I’ve visited California quite a few times already as that’s where my husband is from and I love it there. I’m sure you will love it too!

    April 28 2015

How exciting Alex! It sounds like you’ve got some amazing destinations on your summer itinerary. It’s so nice that you get to use your summer months to explore the US. I’ve done pathetically little traveling within the US. I’ve actually really enjoyed reading your posts about US travel. They remind me of how many amazing places there are to visit in my own country. I actually plan on doing a bit of traveling within my home state of California when I visit this summer. I’m going to make a conscious effort to see California through the eyes of a traveler and I’m really excited 🙂

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

Every year I become more and more interested in domestic travel and start to appreciate my home country more and more. I’m just constantly discovering new places that I never knew existed and getting the itch to visit cities I never cared about before! It helps that I have so many family and friends spread across the country that need frequent visiting 🙂

I understand how you feel about LA. When my husband and I aren’t traveling that is our home base. I never thought I would say that, but there is so much to do and the weather is perfect. Make sure to take a hike to Griffith Park and watch the shirt film on the history.

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

Thanks for the tip Jaime! My dad is a history buff and I love hiking so sounds like the perfect excursion for us. The weather was a huge selling point for my sun-loving father — and I can relate!

YES TO JENI’S ICECREAM in Nashville- that is an absolute must. Although there are a million awesome things to do in this lovely city of mine, I also highly recommend 12th south and the gulch, going out to the red bicycle in germantown for crepes, and eating at Moto (trust me on that!). It’s an awesome city!

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

    April 28 2015

Your summer sounds fantastic and super busy! LA’s always been on my list of places I’m pretty sure I won’t like, too, but I still plan to check out out at some point (I hear the food is amazing). I love being proven wrong about a place 🙂

My summer is going to be pretty crazy – my job ends at the end of June and I’m doing a roundabout road trip back to NC from Portland – camping in Utah, visiting friends in Austin, New Orleans and ATL on the way – then heading off on my first long-term solo trip at the end of July! Three months in Georgia, Armenia, Iran and Turkey – and after that, who knows?

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

I like being proven wrong too 🙂 And your summer does sound crazy — the best kind! Wow! What amazing adventures at home and abroad.

  • Kacy
    April 28 2015

Very cool! I have similar feelings about LA, but still want to go. I feel like it’s a place you have to see no matter what. Maybe not see, per se, but experience. All of your adventures sound awesome. And now I’m obsessively perusing Trove. Many hours will be lost 😉

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

Think of those hours as an investment in future wanderlust 🙂

  • Your plans for the summer sounds amazing! I wish you alot of fun exploring new places! Thank you also for introducing “Trover” to me! Seems to be a cool thing!

    Have a good time!

Ah so many plans! How are you going to fit all that in? Kentucky and Tennessee will always remind me childhood family vacations, so it would be interesting to go back and explore them a bit more now that I’m a little older. And I’ve never actually been to Nashville, despite having been to Tennessee more time than I can count. I’m excited to read about that :). Have fun!

    • Alex
      April 29 2015

Thanks Rachel! It will be a tad hectic but as opposed to my usual extended travels, most of these are short little getaways (for example, I’ll only be in Ithaca two nights, Aruba three, Bermuda four, etc.) Makes it easier to fit a lot in 🙂

  • Kat
    April 29 2015

Wow, I cannot wait to read about all these upcoming trips! I am definitely a bit of a US fan, so look forward to getting some inspiration for the next time I return. Also, I rather want that t shirt too haha.

        May 7 2015

Yes, I absolutely loved Athens! Ended up meeting a couple there and sampling a good few bars there (you know, for research reasons). It did make the climb up to the Acropolis pretty tough the next day, but well worth it 🙂

My favorite find of research! Athens has some great laboratories 🙂

Omg Alex, I need to resist a full-on assault of LA recommendations!! I know all too well that lots of people hate my beloved city but it’s so absolutely huge (the size of TWENTY TWO Manhattans), you are BOUND to find stuff that appeals. I can see you really digging the South Bay beach towns like Manhattan Beach & Hermosa, Downtown & the Arts District, and the Eastside boho hubs of Echo Park, Silver Lake & Los Feliz.

Bermuda was my family’s go-to vacation spot growing up. I have the fondest memories scooting around that beautiful little island.

Nashville has the hottest guys and they’re all musicians. Watch out.

Becky let’s meet up while I’m there! I was bummed I couldn’t ask last time due to the Great Work Crisis of 2014, but I think this round it’s a MUST. Also yay! I’m so excited to hear a vote for Bermuda. Any tips there? I have this little thing for islands, as you may have noticed.

Umm YES! I will make you love LA damnit if I have to stuff that $5 roach coach burrito down your throat. Pls get in touch anytime about your plans!

As for Bermuda, I could not in good faith recommend anything as my last time there I was about 10. I remember staying in a beautiful turquoise cottage, spotting the largest beetle of my life (WITH polka dots), scooting everywhere with my dad on a moped (and passing several accidents) & doing very old world British Empire type things like shuffleboard. All VERY helpful I know!

Becky, you’ve unearthed my ulterior motive to find Alex a hot musician and get her to surrender her nomadic ways for life as a Southern girl 😉

I AM NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS MOTIVE.

Bonaire is awesome, you’re gonna love it! Perfect for scuba addicts and a very authentic place. I was there for a week in late December and I can’t wait to go back. I’ve stop by Aruba for a day, and I’m not a big fan, though. Very touristy and artificial

Yay, I can’t wait! We will be in Bonaire for a week of pretty hardcore diving followed by a few days in Aruba to basically unwind and have a little vacation 🙂 So I think it will be a good balance — I am glad we are spending the bulk of time in Bonaire.

  • Some home town traveling and some not-so hometown traveling. Same here! Love that you have so many places to visit this summer. Getting lot to follow ;).And being a total USA fan, it nice to get some tips to the areas we will be heading next. I always recommend San Fransisco when I have the change, I just love the atmosphere there.

Yes, I will have a LOT to report on from this summer. Hope everyone is ready for a deluge of posts 🙂

I have nevere been to Aruba but I have heard via my favorite instagrammer ever that island SUP is a must do. Also if you need more motivation for that island, yoga_girl is a good account to check out,

I just flipped through her account and she seems to be all over the place right now! Is she from Aruba, or based there? I am definitely hoping to get some SUP in!

Based there, she pioneered SUP yoga there. She is all over right now but May be back by the time you get there.

Pre-trip daydreaming is the bestest!! We’re only 5 months into 2015 and we’re thinking about Central America next year!

Trover looks like a pretty neat tool. We’re definitely going to check it out!

    Happy summer Travels Alex!

We’ve been on a travel hiatus as of late, but starting at the end of May, we’ll be jet-setting a bunch: Miami, Boston, Portland, Seattle, Finland, Mexico, Austin… and that’s just for the rest of the year!

Your travels look amazing, too! 🙂

Ah, Miami is one of my favorite US cities and Austin is one of the ones I’m most craving a visit to. Sounds fantastic!

You may be sick of me come October when we reconvene yet again in the Bahamas! Not gonna lie: I’m every bit as excited for you (and K and C) to visit me as I am for any other trips I have planned this year. And worry not: Jeni’s is basically a required food group for me (and Legato Gelato, two blocks from my place, is a close second, depending on the day).

I absolutely adore Trover to do trip planning – I’ve used it loads in Australia to narrow down where to go as we only had 1 month for our roadtrip. It was incredibly useful! Your travel plans sound fabulous!

I love the mapping feature! So great for road trips. And thanks — so excited for summer!
